What happens when you modify a 1973 Porsche 914 to run on vegetable oil?

It's not every day that a 1973 Porsche 914 modified to run on vegetable oil or biodiesel is donated to one of our partner stations. So when we got Gavin Watson's donation for WSHU, we knew it was one-of-a-kind.

The owner was committed to using 100% renewable energy so he first tweaked it to run on solar-powered rechargeable batteries but the range was too limiting for much use. After having success converting his VW Golf Diesel to run on vegetable oil (yes, that'd be a VolksVegan), he decided to do the same with the Porsche. He installed a 40 horsepower turbo diesel boat-motor and soon enough the old 914 was averaging 60 mpg on 100% soybean oil.

In 2006 it won Most Environmentally Friendly and Highest Mileage Bio-Fuel Vehicle at the NESEA Tour De Sol. It recently sold at auction with proceeds going to support partner station WSHU, public radio for Fairfield, Connecticut.
