How to Donate a Car in Ohio

Donating a vehicle to charity in Ohio is an easy process, but you’ll want to be aware of a few specific steps:

  1. Pick a charity you'd like to support. We provide a list of public radio stations and other charities below.
  2. Complete and sign your vehicle title.
  3. Note: If your vehicle is missing its title, you can obtain a duplicate from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You can find out how at the Ohio BMV website.

Ohio has about 4.6 million vehicles registered across the state. The average vehicle registered is 11.6 years old, right at the national average. With that many cars egistered, you know that there are tens of thousands of cars in Ohio just sitting around that you wouldn’t pay to fix if somebody dared you. But forgotten, unused, unloved cars are a great source of funding for your favorite local public radio station.

While the best part of donating a car in Ohio is the support you provide to the people who deliver news, music and insightful talk to your radio every single day, the second best part is how easy it is to donate:

  1. Have your vehicle title ready.
  2. Follow this link to the Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program or call us at 1-877-215-0227.
  3. Answer the questions about your car and yourself.
  4. Select a date and time to have your car picked up.

It’s really that easy.

Of course, there’s a bit of paperwork you need to fill out. On the day your vehicle is picked up, you’ll need a few things to complete the process:

Vehicle Title: IMPORTANT! OHIO REQUIRES A THE TITLE TO BE NOTARIZED, SO DO NOT SIGN THE TITLE UNTIL YOU’RE IN THE PRESENCE OF A NOTARY! In order to complete your Ohio car donation, transfer your title by PRINTING and SIGNING your name in the SELLER section on the BACK of the title beneath the section that says “ODOMETER CERTIFCATION”, and make sure it’s EXACTLY as it appears printed on the front of the title.

Day of Pickup

The day of your scheduled vehicle pickup, you’ll need to provide the driver with the completed title, along with the keys. After the vehicle sells, you'll receive a vehicle donation receipt for tax purposes.

Ohio Car Donation FAQs

Do you accept any vehicle, anywhere?

Yes, we accept cars, trucks, boats, planes, motorcycles, RVs, and heavy farm equipment, running or not. Just nothing by Fisher Price. No smog certificate is necessary. We pick up vehicles anywhere in the country, with very few exceptions.

How much money from my car donation goes to my local public radio station?

We're very proud that our program returns the largest percentage of gross proceeds to stations. We are all public radio employees, and fans. We are doing this because we love your station as much as you do. There are costs and fees that have to be deducted during the car donation process. We have to pay for car pickup or towing, title transfer, auction or dismantling fees, and other costs associated with the program. However, when it's all said and done, we return a minimum of 70% of the gross proceeds to the station, a number that makes your station very happy.

My car won’t pass Ohio’s emissions test. Is it still ok to donate to a Ohio Public Radio station?

Yes! Ohio requires that cars between four and 25 years old must go through an E-Check emissions inspection. If your car won’t pass and is currently clogging your driveway, we’ll help you get rid of it and you’ll put it to good use. A vehicle donation is a great way to move that car along and support your favorite public radio station.
