Jon Lipman is your perfect philosopher-mechanic, a well-read man with one foot still firmly planted in the ideals of the sixties, blessed with a wry and irreverant sense of humor. He shows no signs of caving in to the canine rapacity of his profession, and holds fast to a keen social consciousness. When money was tight, and repairs critical, he has been known to suggest installments, as if it was nothing at all to be ashamed of, and has actually advised me on occasion to put off particular repairs which he did not feel were pressing. Honest, smart, funny, competent and compassionate: what more could one ask for in a mechanic?

Jon has recently sold his interest in his shop to Tim Kitt, a Swedish automobile expert who hails from Yorkshire, England. Tim is changing the name of the shop to "Swedemasters" to better indicate his coverage of both Volvos and Saabs. Tim is a fine gentleman who is intent upon continuing the traditions that Jon established. I have known him a relatively short time, but find him to be extremely personable and capable.

Olly is my '85 Volvo wagon and he's only known 4 mechanics and Swedemasters is the best he's had. Tim is a really nice guy and is really straight with you about the car's condition and the work needed without padding his work docket. Some have said it's in a "bad area." Look, these folks don't know what a "bad area" is, and after leaving Olly unlocked with the keys in him out front (not behind the gate)over a weekend I can say the area is just fine. I'd say if you're in need of some Volvo work Tim's your man.

My son wrecked his vintage Volvo in LA. I found a replacement car for him in northern California from a Volvo mechanic I know. He took off to get the car, but the car stopped running outside of Santa Barbara. While I told him to let the car cool off, I went to the Car Talk website (thanks!) and found this garage, and called them up. BTW, it is now Swedemasters. I explained the problem to Dean there and told him I just wanted the least expensive fix as the car would be junked when he got up north. I called my son back and had him get the car towed to Swedemasters. It was now Friday afternoon. They are supposed to close at 5 p.m., and at 6:15 they call me and get my credit card number for the less than $100 repair to install a used air mass meter. It had been broken in the crash. He got to Eureka fine! What service and honesty. I'm impressed with them.
