I love these guys! Jim Askim is a totally stand-up guy. It's a two man shop, so you get personalized service. Jim's the owner and also does the work. They've been working on my cars for near 20 years and I'd never go anywhere else. They worked on my 1984 Subaru for years (the one I got rid of at 250,000 miles finally!) The ignition key got stripped eventually. The price then for putting in a new one was about $400. Jim suggested we do a cheaper fix, putting an additional ignition switch on the left side of the steering wheel for about $150. It was a little funky, but this was an old (much loved however) beater by this time, and I appreciated that he offered the cheaper option. I took it. Since then, he's also worked on my Volkswagen. He changed the clutch and made a mistake that had it wearing out in about six months. He put it up on the lift, found it was his mistake, and changed it again, at no additional cost to me, and gave me a loaner car as well (which he doesn't usually do). He is honest, honest, honest. I highly recommend this shop especially if you have a Subaru, but I'd go there for any car care. If he doesn't know, he'll consult.

I had a check engine light go on in our 01 Forester about a year after I moved to Marin County in 2003. Not knowing any local mechanics, I did some research on the internet (including Car Talk) and started asking around. Whenever I mentioned Subaru, Askim's name came up. I took the Forester in and had him take a look. Jim is my kind of mechanic. He fixed the problem and told me what other things might need some work in the next 3 to 6 months. The car visited him 2 more times; the last for a thorough check up before I shipped it to my son in NJ. He fixed a leaking oil seal and a torn CV boot I would not have noticed. I have recommended Jim to at least half a dozen Subie owners. If you visit, check out the SpecMiata racer that his co-worker takes to the track. Looks like fun!
