Paul Cowden and his staff of mechanics are knowledgeable, friendly and highly competent. The shop is always full of cars to be repaired, yet it's *spotless*. Their prices are above average, but they are honest to a fault and have saved me hundreds of dollars by not jerking me around.

Nice guy Paul is the front man and he spends a good deal of time going through all the questions you have and happily listens to the silly noises you use to describe your car's problems.

The Cowden team is wonderful. Paul always answers all of my questions patiently and thoroughly, sometimes even pulling spare parts out of boxes to illustrate how certain systems work. They're not inexpensive, but they're not sneaky--and they're very respectful about what you can and can't afford to do at any given time. They've helped prioritize repairs for my creaky old car more than once.

Took my car there based on information from this database. Was pleased by the service. The price was reasonable by San Francisco standards. They were very upfont about work that wasn't needed and appear to have the customers interest in mind. Cleanest car shop I've ever seen too. Only downside is that they are not open on Fridays.

They listen, advise, suggest priorities and options, give very good estimates on costs, and deliver the car repaired and either on time or earlier, and all this from one of the cleanest, quietest shops I've seen outside of Japan.

Paul and his staff have been my mechanics for over 15+ years and through multiple cars. They have inspected potential purchases for me as well. I have never had a problem and they have kept my cars running well into old age. I have recommended their services to many friends.

We drive used rather than new cars, but keep them a long time. We've been going to Paul for more than 12 years, and wouldn't think of going elsewhere. He's very talented in explaining things to the non-mechanically inclined. When an aging BMW I'd had for years developed an electrical problem, I though I was done for, but the staff figured it out. It took a couple tries, but some degree of trial and error inheres in those situations. The unsuccessful fix was done for a good reason, and did help zero in on what turned out to be the problem. On another car after a CV joint was replaced, the parts mfgr had to declare a recall I'd never have known about. Paul called me, had me bring the car in, and re-did the work at no more cost to me. A pre-purchase check on a used car we were considering steered us away from what likely would have been a big mistake. The shop works 10-hour days, so it's easy to bring my car in early and pick it up after I get off work at 5 pm, Monday through Thursday, but on Fridays they're closed. The bills are fair, though not cheap, but as Ray says, "It's the stingy man who pays the most." If you need a mechanic in San Francisco you can't go wrong with Paul Cowden.
