Just when I was beginning to think that all mechanics with a wrench in their hands were liars, Joe Moss proved me wrong. He told straight up what was wrong with my VW Beetle, and always explained to me what was wrong with my car without making me feel stupid. He's awesome!

Now that the warranty has expired on my GTI, I have found the shop that's going to take care of my car as long as I have it. Small shop, no BS & about a block from BART. Charlotte, the woman you make your appointment with, deal with and pay is wonderful and not at all like the "Would you like a rose?" automatons at the SF dealer, Royal Motors. I'm very happy to have found this shop. And I found it here.

The Moss Motors folks were friendly and honest, and didn't try to charge me for a lot of unnecessary work.

Joe at Moss Motors has been my mechanic since the warranty expired on my VW (they handled the oil changes prior to that). Recently, while on a road trip, my GTI's dashboard began to intermittently light up like a pinball machine and the TipTronic transmission wouldn't select a gear. From a small town in northern New Mexico with no VW specialist within 100 miles, I called Moss Motors for advice. Joe advised me to have a local mechanic pull the car's codes and call him back. With the fault codes, he suggested a recent VW Technical Service Bulletin calling for the replacement of the fuel pump relay might correct the problem. I was able to have the local shop (they were great, but they weren't aware of the TSB) order the part and I was on my way. This is the kind of care the local dealer can't provide. If you're driving a German car in SF, this is the shop for you.

Joe Moss knows his Volkswagens. He's a nice but no-nonsense kind of guy, who is super honest and completely willing to explain anything you want to know. He's also very biodiesel-knowledgeable, for people like me who run their VW TDIs on biodiesel.
