Noe Valley Auto Works, admittedly, is the only mechanic shop in Noe Valley. But fortunately it's a good one. My last car, a Honda Civic, was in horrible shape, the timing belt had gone out and another mechanic had made a complete mess of things. He installed a used engine, but had not mentioned a clogged something or other (I'm really bad at remembering this stuff, it was a year ago) that could have easily been cleaned out. But after the engine was installed, it would have costed an arma and a leg to get under the engine again. Plus the previous mechanic had put the timing bel on incorrectly, which explained the car running very poorly. I took it into Noe Valley Auto, and they first fixed the timing belt. They did the best they could to revive the poor Honda, charging me next to nothing. They were really honest and told me to send it to Honda Heaven. I did. I bought an Acura, and came in after 6 months for a tune up, and they told me to come back when it really needed one! How do they make money?

I just want to give my full support to this place. Admittedly, the prices are a little higher than other mechanics in the Bay Area, but I wouldnt say that their prices are outrageous. Plus, Im willing to shell out a little extra cash to this place because I know that my car will be fixed right the first time around and I wont be charged for something my car doesnt even need. Whenever my 10 year old Nissan NX2000 had a problem, Phil (whos the best) wrote out detailed receipts specifying what he had done and showed me the problem areas he found in my car (and I didnt even need to ask). More specifically, for two years my check engine light continuously came on and would stay on. I took it to three different mechanics who each had a different idea what was causing the light to come on. I bought all of their stories and paid hundreds of dollars to get it fixed, but the light would come on again just after I pulled out of the garage. Phil was able to find and fix the problem on the first try. Its been three years and the light still hasnt caused me any problems. Plus, he helped me get some money back from another station that took advatage of me. So if youre looking for someone whos honest and extremely competent about Nissan cars, I would take your car to this place. Its well worth the money because this place is the best!

They can be a bit pricey, but it is SF and real estate ain't cheap. But they are always honest. I went asking if I should get my car repaired or trash it. It turned out it needed $3k in repairs, and they said don't bother. Get a different car. When I do, I'll definitely take it back to them for repairs.

The guys at Noe Valley Auto are a great bunch and they do very good work and take good care of your car even older beauties like mine. They do a very good repair job in a timely manner but they are definitely more expensive than other shops but they are very reliable.

Kind of disappointed - they gave told me that they would do diagnosis on an electrical problem for $100, but they only checked the alternator. (even though I told them that I thought that the problem was behind the dashboard) When I picked it up, they told me the alternator was fine, but to really diagnose the problem that they would have to remove the dashboard for an additional $300. I could have had the alternator checked for $15 at Sears. So not very happy. I know that electrical problems can be hard to diagnose, but for $100 I expected more than a simple alternator check. They also could have communicated their limitations to me better.

The mechanics at NVA are skilled, friendly, and honest. Their hours are very convenient (open saturdays), and they are careful about explaining their work. Also, they are flexible in times of emergency (such as when I have literally pushed in a car. Their pricing is comparable to other mechanics in SF. My only reservation has been that for some of the brake jobs I've had, the rotors and pads have not lasted long, or I've run into problems, such as rotor warping. Overall, however, they are excellent.
