Honest ... 'cause they have to: they're local. They live where they work & have for years. Friendly & courteous, they've told us to wait on maintenance (we were ahead of schedule), about a bent rim that the dealership didn't bother telling us about ... etc. After a 1 1/2 years, we're sold.

These guys are great! They are sons of the original owner of the old 76 ststion/garage (a novelty in CA to find an old anything). Being a woman who is semi-competant with tools and with understanding the principals of cars, I get very irritated when mechanics give me the "Don't you worry your pretty little head" or the "It's really very complicated" speaches. I ask Jeff or Chris questions and they take the time to explain "what's up?". And I pester them for details until I understand who, what, why and when......... and these guys, God bless their greasy hands, explain every bit of the problem or repair to me. I recently really tested their patience with me when I brought in my 1957 Nash Metropolitan for a brakes and seals job. I supplied the parts and they did the work. It was a learning curve for them (how does the rear axel come off? and where will we get new bearings?). I kept feeding them parts as they uncovered more "issues". In the end they charged me a very fair price for the labor involved, they had poured over the car as though their only surviving relative was going to drive it across the Austrailian Outback. They took time while we were awaiting parts to tweek up the fuel system (added a filter into the line) and fix the rear license light etc. and charged me bub-kiss for the small parts involved. All in all I am very pleased with their old fashioned service.

Very accommodating and never pushy about making extra repairs. They tell you what's wrong with the car and leave it up to you to decide who to have the work done by, and when. And they're VERY polite.

I went to them with concerns about my rear brakes - at the time i'd purchased the car, they were at 30% of new. Not only did they give me a free brake fluid top-off, but told me i'd be fine for another 2,000 miles. Great advice, great explanations for my clueless questions, called me before doing anything that would have cost me. Plus, they're a few blocks down from the San Carlos Caltrain station.

I went to them to mount and balance some tires I'd bought online and they had a very reasonable price (under $25 per tire for mounting, balancing, valve stems and disposal). Unfortunately, their balancing machine broke the morning of my appointment so they were unable to complete that part of the job but I'm headed back later this week when it's fixed. They were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable with a good price.

Nielsens is a family run shop that employs friendly and personable people. They live in the community and service their customers well. They even have a full service pump available which is a great asset to many older drivers. They've retained the 1940's look of their station, but are always up to date on car repairs. I consider Jeff and Chris to be the Tom and Ray of San Carlos.

I never give anybody five stars, but these guys are the best. They are smart and honest, and they are always polite and patient. They never overcharge, and, in fact, have saved me money by convincing the parts manufacturer to honor its warranty. They do not treat customers condescendingly and explain everything they're doing. Once took my car to three separate shops (including a VW specialist), none of which could fix my car, but Jeff discovered the problem right away and fixed it for less than the previous place had charged just to LOOK at it. Love love love Nielsen Automotive!

I've never had any major work done (my cars seem to just die or get into accidents), but they've been super-good at keeping my cars running cheap. I make a point of buying my gas there to keep them in business.
