The shop does general repairs on most foreign makes (esp. Japanese). They're honest and will talk you out of a repair if they don't feel is necessary. They just do good, honest, straightforward work.

Dan has always been extremely honest and fair in his work, often charging less for the job than the Toyota dealership up the street wants for the parts -- and Dan gets his parts new from the Toyota dealership. They even offers a loaner car to his long term clients if you really need it (just refill the tank). The shop leans heavily toward the do what you need to now, and not what you might need to do. That is tempered with safety first. When I mentioned some strong vibrations as I turned one direction Dan asked that I bring the car in immediately. After a test drive he said, "Okay, it is safe to drive", lets schedule an appointment. As the shop gets busier, they are (understandably) less willing to take time to hunt down those annoying "what can it be" problems.

The owner is Dan Smith and his number is 650 367 7156. Dan has worked on an assortment of cars for me over the years, including a '67 Austin Healy, a 1990s vintage Saturn, a Miata, a Ford Explorer, and a Saab. He has never tried to oversell me on any services, and on occasion has told me that my request for work was unnecessary. I've even consulted him on what type of car to buy. I would recommend Dan without hesitation. (He is also a very nice guy, and his little daughter is cute as a button.)

I've always driven older cars for all of my driving life (30 yrs), and so I've always been dependent on mechanics to keep me going. Dan Smith has been the best for fixing problems so that they stay fixed. He also goes out of his way to make it convenient for me to drop off my car: his home is on my way to work and his shop is kind of out of the way for me, so I drop my car off at his house in the morning (he drives it in to the shop for me) and ride my bike the rest of the way to work. He's also terrific about explaining in detail the repairs he's doing, showing me the old parts and stuff like that. With many other mechanics I've to really dig if I want a detailed explanation. Not with Dan
