Only been there a couple of times - once for transmission service on my old Maverick; the other to have the tranmission replaced on my BEEP Taurus. So while I haven't been there a lot, the shop is "the" place to go for honest and competent transmission work in Long Beach, according to my brake shop (that I've been going to for 25-plus years), and my regular maintenance shop (who are wonderful.)

Stu's was one of only a few shops that would even work on my motorhome and Volvo. They were honest and fair and came highly recommended by several friends and my local auto repair shop. I drove in on a Thursday night as they were closing their gates. A mechanic, who had already changed his clothes and was leaving volunteered to check out my car. Although I had already had it diagnosed by two different shops, he took the time to computer scan my car and told me what I already knew. The owner gave me a very thorough explanation as to what it would take to fix the problem. He did not pressure me and did not rush me. I went home and called the next day to arrange to have my transmission rebuilt. That was 280,000 miles ago!!!!! I love Stu's and would recommend them to anyone who wants honesty, integrity, fantastic work and a fair price. Thank you Stu's.

When the clutch burned out on an old 4WD Toyota, I called around for not only estimates but also to find a shop familiar with my old but now rare. Since Only Stu's and another shop had some experience, and Jim (at Herb & Red's) recommendation sold me on going to Stu's. [Jim doesn't normally do clutches and transmissions -- they're busy enough doing everything else!], so he also referred me to Stu's A&E Transmission. These two facts convinced me to give them a try, and I was not disappointed. Not only did they fix the clutch and replace the flywheel, they also fixed several other problems of which I was not aware. They even installed new shocks and brake parts (both of which I supplied) at no additional cost. Whether or not this is their normal policy, I cannot say; but it has sold me on their business.

I found this reference at this site. I drove my car to the shop and explained the problem. The shop was busy but they got on the diagnosis promptly. the car a 96 Aurora with 55k miles that I inherited from my mother in Nov 2007. The problem was with shifting. The car resisted going over 45 mph and the rpms would go up to 5k then drop down when pressure removed from accelerator to about 2k. Also there was a miss during acceleration. The diagnosis took about 2 hours (busy shop), the repair took about 2 hours, the tuneup about 2 hours. The bill was about half what I expected. The car runs better than before I got it. To say the least I am pleased. I've had it back about 2 days so far.
