My 1986 Olds 98 had been showing signs of age, even after an engine rebuild two years ago. At 145,000 miles the original acceleration was gone, the shifting seemed delayed, and the car was beginning to stall intermittently. Moises, the shop owner, tapped into GM's computerized service bulletins to recover a 1989 notice about the stalling. He tested a suspect PROM to confirm its proper operation, then deduced carbonized injectors, which he cleaned with an inexpensive additive. Stalling was cured and accelleration restored. However, a week later I noticed occasional missing and white smoke from engine and exhaust. Moises tested for leaking head gasket by substituting low pressure radiator cap. When problem continued he deduced a worn out vacuum modulator which leaked transmission fluid into the cylinders. Problem fixed, BEFORE pulling the head!
