I aquired an '80 BMW 320i that had over-heating problems. No mechanic could figure out why. The guys at BP fixed it right away in a timely, professional manner. They even fixed a leak in a tire while the car was there, which indicated they gave the car a thorough looking over. We returned to do a major tune-up and maintenance. They took the time to explain the things that needed to be done right away, and those things that could wait. We've had no problems with the car in the last 2 years since. They returned the car washed and clean inside every time. Although the repairs were not cheap, I believe they are comparable to other specialized garages in the area.

I had a 1990 BMW 525 that I had serviced at BP when I lived in San Francisco. It was a fairly involved process to get the car over to them, but they were that good. I did so because they were spectacularly competent without the snotty attitude that comes with any of the SF shops that knew what they were doing. There were some things that they knew they could not work on because BMW was constantly changing the computers from year-to-year, but they were always the first to disclose that information if they felt you were able and interested in understanding it. They also offer a great service for used car buyers and can tell you the cost of repairs to a car you are about to purchase for a nominal fee. I very much consider them a gem of the bay area and hope they can maintain their quality and service indefinitely!

I've been using BP for several years with great success. They've been looking after my '88 528e with 225,000 and I've never felt uncomfortable with what they charge or the work they've done. I've just shipped my car back to CA for my dad and they will be the only mechanics I'll use. They have better expertise than the dealer in my opinion and were I still in CA I would be bringing my 540iT to them after the BMW service agreement runs out. I've sent them 3 other friends who have had the same experience. Wish they were here in NJ.

They are one of the most competent BMW shops around the Bay Area. By far better than any BMW dealer I ever visited (and hope never to visit again). Reasonable but not cheap - they charge for every nut and washer (bad PR), but honest. I typically distrust mechanics, but I trust these guys, and will come back if (sob, weep) needed. Highly recommended. They are at 1218 7th Street, Berkeley, CA (510) 524-6000.

First off, don't expect cheapHowever, they have to cover their costs and they are not padding any bills.. You can count on fair, honest, perfect work and thorough explanation of what they need to do/have done. We have brought two older BMWs, both bought used, here and they took the time to check things out and let us know what needed doing right away and what could wait until later. They have both in top working condition, including a 740i from a model year that gets bad reviews from Consumer Reports for repair needs. We have gone here for over five years and if we move anywhere within 100 miles will continue to use these excellent people. As a footnote--the first time we drove one of their old loaners, a beat up gem from the 80s with 275,000 miles on it, we knew we had found out kind of mechanic. The damned car ran like a new one.
