Tony Montaro kept my camry going from 100k to 250k, five years for almost no money. He consistently evaluates the car to make sure that anything that needs to get done, gets done, and nothing more. This has saved me a huge amount over the years (i've been with him for 7.5 years!), and kept the car running great. He is a Master Mechanic and last year left the Toyota/Lexus dealership to open his own shop, which is even better than the dealership. Since I sold my camry, he's been working on my Honda Element and my GF's Subaru Impreza, as well as a my friends Toyotas and Lexus, all for half what dealership would charge for better quality work. He really cares about keeping your car running in tip-top condition. He's not only completely honest, he'll tell you honestly whether its better to use new or rebuilt parts for a particular repair. And he'll get you in and out as fast as is humanly possible.

Very very good! I showed up on a Friday afternoon when my CV joints started clicking, and they installed 2 new drive shafts fast, at a great price, and gave me lunch too! The entire staff was very friendly and honest. I highly recommend them and I plan on taking my car back there again.

After discovering Montero's on this website, my wife and I have been taking our cars there ever since. Above all, I value honesty in auto service, and more than once our cars have been sent home with either very minor repairs when we expected high cost. Once we were charged nothing, because we've taken our cars there multiple times, and he thought the repair was very minor. In addition, when my wife once needed an expensive repair, Tony actually helped her find the part she needed cheaper somewhere else than he could get it directly, Then after she bought the part, he put it in the same day. Even from our first visit, we felt like we were treated as family or friends by Tony and everyone else at the shop. We feel comfortable with all his recommendations (and explanations) and are happy we have an auto shop we feel like we can trust. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for a competent and honest mechanic.

I recently went to the Honda dealer for an oil change, and they tried to get me to pay $1,400 for several repairs on my 2000 Accord. While waiting in the lobby, I pulled up the Car Talk Mechanic Files on my laptop and found Montero's listed. I called Tony and asked him how much he would charge to replace the steering pump, which the dealer quoted at $620. Tony offered $250-300, using a rebuilt pump. The next morning I went to his shop. I had him replace my front and rear brakes and resurface all 4 rotors, which was only $20 less than the dealer, but I was happy to give him the business. In return, he saved me a lot of money. He told me not to waste my money getting an alignment done until I replaced my moderately worn tires. The dealer wanted to charge me $135 for the alignment, and didn't say anything about waiting until I got new tires. Also, instead of just replacing my steering pump, which the dealer said was leaking and needed replacement, Tony cleaned the engine and told me to come back for my next oil change so that he could check and see if the leak was just a gasket, or if the pump really needed to be replaced. While I waited for someone to pick me up, I watched as a stream of loyal customers brought their cars in. I spoke with one, who was a fellow Downey resident who has faithfully brought his immaculate Lexus to Tony for all of his service for the last 3 years, including a transmission replacement. Other people would bring their cars in to get opinions from Tony about various noises or problems. What I liked the most was being able to watch him inspect my car, talk to him, and interact directly with him and his guys that were repairing the cars. At a dealer, they put an annoying salesperson, who is typically motivated by sales or commissions, between me and the mechanic, so I simply don't trust anything they tell me. I have found the mechanics at the Honda dealer have always done a perfect job with my repairs, and I've never had an issue, but the sales people in the service department always get in the way of me asking questions, understanding the problem, or being able to trust the recommended repairs. The fact that Tony recommended that I defer two expensive repairs on my car was a very educational experience. The dealer service salespeople have never recommended alternative options, or further inspection, so I'm pretty happy that I finally ventured away from the dealer and tried an independent mechanic. Instead of $1,400 at the dealer, I ended up spending only $300 with Tony. I'm now happy to use him for the steering pump repair if I need it, and for the alignment once I get new tires.

Since I started going to Montero's I have not needed a single repair in 3 or 4 years (I currently have 120,000 miles on my Scion). I recommended Montero's to a friend and he also hasn't needed a repair since switching from the dealer to Montero's (the dealer found a repair needed every time he took it in) . If he thinks I can do something cheaper myself, he recommends that to me. Montero's is a great place to take your car.
