This past weekend, my wife Lisa hit a couple of thrift shops in suburban Boston and came home with a bunch of stuff, including this book called "Think Small, What's So Funny About a Volkswagen," and in its pages, I think I found the origins of Car Talk.

What can you say of the shocking news that Volkswagen devised – and, then, even more embarrassingly, employed – a super-sneaky software hack to make it appear to U.S. government regulators that 482,000 diesel engines it sold here were less polluting than they actually were?

Volkswagen wants to be the world's top volume carmaker by 2018. Will it happen? Not if they keep cranking out SUVs and neglecting the unusually efficient, well-made small cars that made them popular in the U.S. when they first arrived.
