I went to Big Al's for my driver's side cv joint and they fixed it for 135.00, which I thought was very reasonable. They were extremely honest, and when I got them to check my breaks, they said that the rear ones looked great, but I needed front ones. I did not get my breaks done there, just because that is something I can do myself, but they could of easily of set me up with something I did not need, being that I am a young kid and also a girl. I looked at the front breaks to make sure they were in fact bad after I left the shop, and sure enough, there were grooves in the rotors and the pads were down to nothing. Another good Big Al's experience is that my dad went there to get his muffler fixed, and they only charged him 5 bucks. He got them to check other things, and they said everything else looked good (could of ripped him there if they wanted to). They do excellent work and are very very efficient time wise. While I was there getting my cv joint fixed,a regular customer in front of me had his breaks checked for free, and they told him that they looked great and had over half a pad left on each. The customer kept asking "are you sure, I havent replaced them in such and such time" and the mechanic kept contesting that his breaks were in great shape. The customer was an elderly man and probably didnt put a lot of miles on his car. This really impressed me, because they totally had an opportunity to rip him off. Another guy in front of me was short 3 bucks, and they went ahead and let him pay minus three bucks of the price was for his muffler, so he wouldent have to run home and get more money. This is something other places would not do that I have been to, especially big impersonal chains. Speaking of which, I went to Pep boys to get tires, and they told me my front struts were bad and i needed new ones. This really pissed me off, because little did they know I had just gotten new front struts, and guess who I got them from? Pep Boys!! Man it is hard to find an honest mechanic, especially when the scum bag rip you off mechanics assume that all women are idiots when it comes to cars. * Pep Boys is on Airline Blvd in Portsmouth: Customer BEWARE!!
