I've been taking my cars, VW, Honda, Audi, Toyota, and Subaru, to Dave Wright for over 25 years. Most of the routine maintenance through a serious tune-up I do myself and I used to do more, so I'm not totally ignorant about cars. Dave knows what he can do and what he can't, and he'll point you in the right (cheap and competent) direction if he can't do what's needed, which isn't much. The few times I've checked prices his were the best. If you're short of money, he gives you options like junk parts. He'll also tell you (accurately) how long you can get safely by when something is going but not gone. But when you got to get it fixed, he'll tell you. If he doesn't know immediately what's wrong, he'll tell you he doesn't, what he'll do to figure it out, and how much it will cost you to figure it out. When he has other mechanics working for him, they're good or they're gone. He always takes the time to explain what needs to be done and why. Any non- routine part he replaces he saves to show you what was wrong. The yard of the shop looks like a wrecking yard and the neighborhood ain't the best but don't be put off: what he saves on appearances is what doesn't come out of your pocket. Although the name of his shop includes "Import", he'll work on anything. So far as I can tell, he can keep anything with life in it going; he helped me keep an '87 Accord going for 420,000 miles, and it was getting the same mileage as new when I totaled it. (Dumb, dumb, dumb as George W.) Only problem is that he doesn't always manage to get your car done when he says he will. That drives my wife postal, but I've been going to him so long I know how he works. I'd rather get the work done well than on time. As the last suggests, he's kind of laid back. But don't be fooled: he is definately top drawer. It took me a while to sign him up here because I didn't want my cars to take any longer to be finished. But I figured there are a lot of folks without yuppie cash who might need a mechanic who doesn't fit the K&K profile, so what the hey. Besides, he's good enough to be like an M.D.: he won't take the new ones if he doesn't need them.
