I was driving home from NJ to SC for the Christmas holidays. About eight hours and 500 miles after I started, my car developed an unusual shimmy in the front end. I was totally mystified, because it would get worse and worse if I maintained speed, but it would slack off or even disappear if I accelerated or braked even a few mph. It was late, and I didn't want to be stranded in the dark, so I pulled off and found a motel room for the evening. The clerk recommended that I call Scott Smith at Bert's Garage in the morning. I took the car to them after calling them at 8 AM. The shimmy was gone, but I thought it may have been because the car had cooled down overnight; besides, I wanted to have a mechanic look it over and make sure nothing was about to give out and cause a wreck. They checked all over, but didn't notice anything. Then they took it out for a test drive, and the shimmy didn't return (and it hasn't returned since that evening, either - weird). Because they hadn't done any work other than a visual check and a 15-minute test drive, they only charged me $10 for their time. About as honest and fair a group of mechanics as you could hope to find!
