John specializes in foreign cars and his prices are very reasonable. I have been a customer of his since 1978, when I purchased a used, bright yellow VW Bettle from him which he had customized. He has worked on all of my cars since then: two VW's; an Opel GT (boy, was that an unrelaible vehicle); a 1985 Honda CRX which I owned for seven years; a Diahatsu Rocky and my current car, a 1990 Mazda Miata which I purchased used in 1992, and which I truly love. John has integrity, is honest, fair, reliable, always stands by his work, goes out-of-his-way to satisfy his customers and his prices are reasonable. I am continuously impressed with the quality of his work and trust him to work on any car that I own. In addition, he is friendly, personable and always has time to explain what needs to repaired. Also, he does little things above and beyond the call of duty, like resetting my clock from daylight to standard time and he never charges for those little extras. When I leave my car at his garage before he opens, he has no trouble getting into and driving it into the garage as he has permanent ppossession of my car keys. I recommend him and his work unconditionally.

I wouldn't buy a car without taking it to John Shields first. I have absolute faith in his honesty and integrity. If something needs to be taken care of now, he'll tell me. If it can wait, he'll tell me that, too. He works on my son's twenty-year-old first car with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail that he devotes to my newer-model cars.

I found John by recommendation from another shop (machine shop, not an auto repair shop). John helped me complete a DIY project with a special tool that he had (and I didn't). I returned 3 more times, needing his help. Each time I offered to pay for his time, and each time he refused! Granted, it took only 10 minutes each time, but still he wouldn't accept payment.

I started to use John Sheilds as my auto mechanic shortly after I moved to Salt Lake City from Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1978. He has been my one and only automobile mechanic since then, after several other Salt Lake mechanics were unable to meet my performance expectations. John specializes in foreign cars, working over the past 32 years on my 1975 VW Beetle; Opel GT; Honda CRX; Mazda Miata (MX- 5) which I drove from 1994-2009; Rocky; 1995 Jeep Wrangler; and currehtly my 2006 Sala Red, VW Beetle (2007-2011). John is honest, trustworthly; his estimatesw are accurate; his prices fair; and his performance is excellent. He backs all of his work by assuming personal responsibity for it. The Salt Lake Tribune has published articles about his excellent business ethics. If Sheilds Pro-Tech was a human being and of opposite gender, I would bring him home to meet my parents. I trust him as much if not more than my primary practitioner.
