I found Ron from the mechanics files. I'm glad I did. Previously, I had gone to another mechanic that a friend recommended who works on 2001 or older Mercedes. This guy was pretty tough to deal with, kinda nuts or just maybe too busy. So I did not try again to have him fix my "check engine light". My regular, trusted mechanic in Bellaire does not have the equipment to properly service European cars. So I was in a bind when my car needed service -- now beyond the check engine light caliber type of problems. I sure wasn't going to take it to the dealer. So I emailed Ron. He emailed right back. Took my car in and was treated to a hospitable welcome and felt like I was at the right place. My car (a 97 C230) needed a lot of work. I knew that. But I also know that I saved probably half of what I would have paid at the dealer (don't know for sure, but I suspect I saved a bundle), got to work with good people -- and now my car drives like new. As much as I like my old mechanic, I'll be calling on Ron in the future to work on my 76 Ford F150 and every other car I buy in the future. Go see Ron. You'll be glad you did.

Ron's Downtown Auto was recommended to me by a colleague who has been a loyal fan for many years. I was pleased to discover why: Ron is a rare find. When my Volvo 850 was recently rear-ended, Ron gave me clear options for repair and honest opinions. Even though he thought it was repairable, he was concerned about vehicle safety and recommended taking the salvage value and shopping for something new. I really appreciated Ron's honesty and his interest in putting MY safety, and of course his reputation, over profits. Ron was an incredible asset when shopping for a replacement 850 - he returned calls and checked in with me regularly, he thoroughly inspected the two cars I was trying to choose between buying, and he gave me honest advice. I wound up with a great car and a great mechanic. A final thought: I think you can tell a lot about a person based on how they treat their pets - Ron has three great big dogs that he adores (and keeps away from cars and clients). One hot afternoon while I was waiting for a ride, Ron fed each one an icee pop. Anyone who gives popsicles to dogs is okay by me!

My wife and I have been a customer of Ron's for five years. They are super. One, they complete things quickly. Two, they are friendly and honest. Never has Ron tried to overcharge me. I know more about cars than I let on, and Ron has reasonable diagnoses that work. Three, their estimates are always right on. Four, they almost always fix things the first time. The one time that Ron had a very hard problem to diagnose, he had to fix a couple of things. He acutally only charged me for the first repair and wouldn't take money for the second repair, even after I insisted. Granted I'm a five year customer, but I think this shows their attitude at Ron's. I got really lucky finding a group of talented, honest, and dependable mechanics right off the bat after moving to Houston. If you live or work in the Downtown/Midtown/Montrose area, I would seriously consider Ron's.

After driving half way across town, I didn't know if it would be worth the extra effort. The answer is a resounding YES. Ron and his crew will be seeing much more of my 1997 S90 when the time comes for more repairs.

Ron is a friendly guy, and a great mechanic to boot. His shop is clean, and his staff experienced and a plesure to deal with. They always take the time to check out your problem immediately, and explain what needs to be done. Never any pressure or hard sell here. His prices are more than fair for the quality of his work, and he sticks to his estimates. No low-ball estimates to get you in the door, then jacking up the prices like some places I have patronized in the past. The quality of the parts he uses are the best, not autozone junk. I have been extremely satisfied with his work on my Volvo. Never once had to return with a problem on a repair. Its always been right the first time. I highly recommend Ron to any foreign or domestic car owners that are looking for an honest and experienced mechanic. A good mechanic is hard to find, but I think you will be more than satisfied here. Worth the drive, even if you are not in the mid-town area. And hey, you know he's a good guy, because he likes dogs.!!

I contacted Ron's Downtown Auto Repair based on information I recieved on MechaniXFiles. I emailed the shop with a description of my problem (loose ignition on a Ford Taurus), and Ron emailed me immediately with the likely diagnosis and an estimate that he ultimately stuck with -- and that I was happy with. He was very quick to respond to any question I sent by email and I was made to feel that my repair was a priority to him. He seemed very straight- forward and honest -- never condenscending (which was important to me as a woman). I will happily return to Ron's with whatever ailments are in store for the Taurus'!

Ron is an excellent, honest, reasonably-priced mechanic. That's pretty much all you need to know.

I know enough about cars to be dangerous and my first response is, "can I diagnose this myself." Without sharing my insights and research, Ron has always suggested exactly what was necessary - nothing more, nothing less. On occasion I've taken quotes and took my work to another shop. Mistake. I've been going to Ron for about 6 years now - he, his brother and his crew are honest and fair. I've recommended the shop to several friends, though a couple were put off by Ron's bluntness, but I sleep better knowing I've gone to an honest mechanic who backs their work,
