One time I took in my car because of a rattle from underneath the chasis. The mechanic told me that I probably needed a new catalitic converter. I said, "ok, do the repair." I came back to pick up the car and he told me the price was $10! I asked why only $10 and he said that all that was wrong was a loose heat shield and that he just welded it into place. I think this shows an incredible amount of honesty. I had given him the ok to replace the catalitic converter, about $200 worth of work, but he didn't do it because it didn't need to be done. Another time I took a car in because of a power steering fluid leak. Gary told me the repair would be about $300, and that I could have it done now, or just keep putting steering fluid in. He said it might last 3 weeks or 3 years. I appreciated that he didn't try to make the repair seem pressing when it wasn't. It was a good thing I didn't spend the money, because 3 months later the car was totalled. And how did he know that?
