Gateway Mobil at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday of the Labor Day weekend, repaired our "dislocated" windshield-wipers so that we tourists could continue our journey in the face of the torrential rains of tropical storm Grace. Strangers on a holiday weekend, we had been rejected by Sears, Walmart (they could replace the blades, but the connection between the wipers and motor had disconnected)-and a 24-hour truck stop ("we can't work on cars, only trucks"),and of course most "service stations" now serve only gas and stomachs. One cannot drive in a rainstorm without wipers. The 24- hour truck stop did, however, recommend a "tire and lube shop right down off College" which turned out to be Gateway Mobil, also a Texas inspection station. The staff at Gateway Mobil immediately assessed the problem, informed us that the part that was broken was not expensive, stated they would try to match the part but if they could not would fix it so that we could manage to get on our way. When they found they could not get the part until Tuesday, they informed us of the situation and we told them to do the best they could. They rigged the driver's side wiper to work and gave us a minimal bill. The staff was courteous, competent, the station clean, and the bill especially reasonable given that this occurred after hours on a holiday weekend and we were tourists in a very vulnerable situation.
