I have taken two of my cars to MF Automotive and the work has been excellent. They are also very honest and will let you know exactly what is going on. If they don't feel comfortable in performing certain jobs, they let you know. You know where you stand with them. And to top it off, the pricing is more than reasonable.

They've looked at my 1996 VW Golf commuter a few times and I've given them permission to work on it a couple of times. They are definitely a reasonable alternative to Harpers, who would surely take me to the cleaners on any sort of repair. Fortunately, I have another gearhead person in my household who can detect B.S. and we have gotten it from MF a couple of times. But I respect that they are in the business to make money, and maybe other customers are more willing to give them carte blanche to add on all those relatively unnecessary things they always recommend. And they sort of give us the run-around when we request specific tasks, and try to distract us with these other proposals for not-so-crucial work. Case in point: For a couple of years I had a rattling heat shield on the exhaust down pipe that I wanted them to fix after I'd welded and re-welded this thing into oblivion. You would think that they would have seen this before (because this happens to all the Golfs from this era) and suggest something besides "replace the whole exhaust system with a stock system"... how dreadfully boring. Well, that is what they recommended and quoted $568 for the stock system after they had already charged us $193 to remove the heat shield and wrap the downpipe (after MUCH back and forth discussion about the specifics of this simple task). We ended up ordering a cat-back, bolt-on system online for $300 with a straight-through ss muffler, which not only was cheaper, but also greatly increased the performance of this somewhat stodgy car. Heck, I would have been willing to pay $568 for them to put on the same (or similar) aftermarket exhaust. It just irritated me that I had to go and do all my own time-consuming research to figure this out when it was such a simple fix, in the end. So in conclusion, I would say that they are probably good at what they do, but they are a little patronizing with clients who may be slightly above average in mechanical knowledge and interest.
