Our Chevy Astro van with 100,000 miles wouldn't start on a beautiful Saturday morning in Newport as we were passing through on our vacation. Not only was it a Saturday, but the Tall Ships were in town and every hotel room was jacked up 4 times the normal rate and the city was packed with people (and with other cantankerous autos like our own). We called AAA and got a tow truck to haul us to one of only two repair shops open on Saturday. Of course we were grateful to get any service on the weekend, but we were sure we would pay a premium for it. Our tow truck driver assured us that the repair shop he was taking us to was honest and reasonable. Right. A great guy, who kind of had a mumbling problem (didn't do much to dispell the anxiety) took a brief look at it and came back out and asked us what that buzzing noise was. We looked at one another and said, "We don't know, aren't you the mechanic?" After another half hour of raising it up and putting it down (we could see that he really was working on our car), checking the battery, the alternator and the starter (all of which were fine---big sighs of relief from us owners each time) he came out and said he'd found the problem: an electrical wire that had been improperly fixed to the engine when the van was customized (prior to our buying it second hand). The wire had been fused by the heat of the engine until it shorted (making an intermittent buzzing I guess--we never heard it). Fortunately it did not short the entire car's wiring and he told us to come back in an hour, he'd have it ready to go. We went for a lovely walk along the harbor, and pondered what multiplication factors we should use to arrive at the bill to be presented on our return. We thought 90 to 120 minutes of work done on our car promptly on a Saturday (Tall Ship Saturday no less) would cost us easily 200 to 300 dollars. Imagine our surprise when he handed us a statement for 67 bucks on our return. We fell all over each other thanking him. I had an overwhelming urge to take him out to lunch, but he appeared rather busy. The car has had no further problems since he moved the wire off the engine block 2 months ago. I sent JB (the man who did the work at the shop)a nice card and some McD"s gift certificates after we got back home in Ohio. It's great to meet people on the road of life who keep up your faith in the goodness of humanity. We both decided it was the best breakdown we ever had!

I had a starter put in my car and had problems with it. I paid them for two tow jobs and paid to have what they said was the problem reparied twice and sitill had the same problem. I took my car to Floyd's Auto in Middletown RI and he told me what the problem was so I went back to B&C and told them and they said I was right and that Floyd had called them. They said they would rplace the stater if I paid the labor cost of $50.00. I did not let them work on my car so I went back to Floyd's and had him replace the oil oil sending unit and clean the motor-and the problem was gone and never returned. I have had work done at Jonny's Getty , and Floyd's in Middleton as well aand recomed both and that you add Floyds Auto Repair to your good guy list I am in sales and have sold to all 3 and had to do collections from B$C but never Floyd's or Jonny's Getty. I know them all very well as I am from Newport, in sales an I have sold cars(me bad guy once apon a time. Barry
