I've been going to Dave's for 5 years. He never tried selling me anything I don't need. He is a very decent chap, a pleasure to deal with. He works by appointment, which is excellent for usual maintenance. If he won't be able to get to you until 2 PM, he won't make you leave the car at 8 AM, though of course you can leave it there early if you want. If you have an emergency, he will do what he can for you. Both Dave and his crew are conscientious. His is the only station I've gone to where they start lug nuts with a pneumatic drill, but tighten them with a big, manual torque wrench. When you go there for a simple oil change, they will do a visual of your exhaust system, tires, CV joints, etc. Regardless, if you ask for a visual check, they will be happy to oblige. In the case of a new customer, I think Dave will give you an extra good check, because he will not assume the previous maintenance was good quality. Please ask him if he performs engine or transmission repairs, it's possible he does. I know he can certainly do head gaskets, and he's done my timing belt once. A noise is coming out of my engine now. I was afraid my lifters were falling apart. I passed by the station for him to take a listen. Dave told me to stop worrying, he is quite certain "it is just a belt or a pulley," and I can take care of it at my leisure. No high-pressure salesmanship, there. (Other times, he has told me when something needs to be checked/fixed ASAP.) The station is located in a red brick building to the right ("North" for you perfectionists) of the Penn State Sub Shop on Rt. 150. The bus stop in Bellefonte is 1/2 mile away from his station, but there are no sidewalks, which makes it adventurous for a pedestrian. Within a couple of hundred feet of Dave's are two food establishments which are not hazardous to walk to if you're "waiting" for your car. Penn State Subs is ok for ice cream. But Mr. Hot Dog is the better choice for a real restaurant, with long hours, though there's no non-smoking section. (Am I getting off track?) And if you get bad news, there's an honest used car dealer on the other side of the sub shop.
