David J. Hooten, the owner and son of a former Marine who hit the beach at Guadalcanal and who served near Chesty Puller (important only to former Marines), is the auto mechanic I've long searched for. He's honest, competent, and a very nice guy. He's not at all pushy, but he'll listen to you. My timing belt broke on a late Sunday afternoon, and I found his shop on foot by chance. His shop was closed, but he was there working on his Dad's vehicle (that's when I met his Marine Dad). He gave me a tow and began working on my car that evening. (He even offered to give me a free ride back to my home in Canyonville, a half hours' drive, if I couldn't find a rental car!) By the next afternoon the car was fixed. His work was very neat; he cleaned the battery, put Vaseline on the terminals, cleaned the windshield washer container, etc. (Shows good attention to details.) And the car now runs great, even better than before it broke down. He showed me the old parts that he had removed, and offered to let me keep them (I declined). He's been there in business for 30 years, and he's also a Corvette owner and enthusiast. He's just an all-around good neighborhood mechanic; I'll go to him again when my car needs service.
