We have a 2000 Nissan Altima that our teenage girls use to get around. A recent mishap resulted in a cracked and partially disconnected front bumper cover. I received two estimates for the repair. Both shops insisted that they would only replace the bumper cover, not merely reattach it. Both estimates came in just under $600. I stopped by Baker's, and Mr. Doug Baker, the owner, stopped what he was working on and walked over to give the problem a look. He poked around and raised the hood and wiggled a few of the pieces. He then disappeared for about five minutes. When he returned he had a handful of parts (connectors, bolts, plugs?), a pair of pliers, and a screwdriver. He then proceeded to insert a few of those connectors into some empty holes and screw the end of the bumper cover back into whatever it is supposed to be attached to. He then rerouted the radiator overflow tube that the Nissan dealership had mis-routed when they addressed a previous mishap (involving a dark road and a deer - but that's a different story). Problem fixed - on the spot - while I watched. Thank You!! Me: "So, how much do I owe you?" Mr. Baker: "Nothing." Me: "Nothing?" Mr Baker: "No, I can't charge you for that. Some shops would make you replace the whole bumper cover. That's not right." I am still in shock. Mr. Baker performs mechanical repairs as well as body work. He also refurbishes older vehicles and re-sells them as safe, reliable student vehicles. (Just in case you're not inclined to go out and buy your newly licensed teen driver a new BMW or Mercedes.) He has found himself a new, and very grateful customer, and I want to let the folks in the area know about this hidden gem.
