I discovered John D. during my time as a graduate student at Syracuse University. He is a real gentleman- kind and patient with people like myself who are far from mechanically minded. He always takes the time to explain the problem in everyday language. He is the most straightforward and honest automechanic I have yet to meet. When I finished grad school, I let him know that I wished that I could take him home with me. I love to let other people know about Mr. Donath. The predictability of John D's honest and reliable service saved me a lot of stress(not to mention time and money) so I'm keen to send CarTalk fans his way.

I have been a customer of John D's Service Center for more than 5 years. During that time, John and Bob have consistently proved their competence and integrity as mechanics. I continue to trust them with my car and never hesitate to recommend John D's to family and friends.

I'm from Oregon and had a great deal of trepidation about New York generally and finding a mechanic for my 1985 Honda DX in particular. The time finally came when my Honda needed some attention, I checked this web site and found other grad students recommending John D's. Taking the reviews with a grain of salt, I took my car there. I must say that the reviewers under-estimate John's skills and character. He is willing to admit when he doesn't know and does the work to find out and report back. His courtesy, outstanding work, fair price and integrity set him and his shop apart. John's great and I can recommend him without qualification.

Needed brake work done and had an estimate done at a shop that's part of a chain. I don't want to mention a name, but it rhymes with Pepboys. They told me a hugely inflated price and tried to sell me new parts that I didn't need (insisted that I have new rotors). Took it down to John D's at 7:30 this morning. By 8:45 he had called me at work with an estimate $100 below the other shop's estimate, and told me they can machine my old rotors no problem (the other shop told me they didn't think they could do it). His estimate was without any knowledge of their estimate. Evertime we've taken a car in there, he has done a great job. I recommend him to everybody in the Syracuse area.

They have declined to perform some services on my car based on the fact that its age did not justify it! They were right - my car died before it became a problem. They are inexpensive and reliable and do not perform unnecessary or illadvised service. I could tell half a dozen stories I used approximately 10 different service centers in 4 different cities during the 15 years my last car lasted. This is the best by far. I hope to take my new car there for another 15 years.

I love John D's. Also an SU grad student, I know that a good mechanic is hard to find, especially in a town overrun by college kids with too much money. John and his partner Bob are very honest - when I brought in a car with a bad muffler, John said that he could fix it, but that the specialty muffler place down the street could probably do it for less. On another occasion, I brought in a car expecting a whole brake job ($150+). Instead, Bob (John's now semi-retired) took a look and said that we could fix the whole thing for $15. I can't recommend John D's highly enough. My only regret is that one day, I'll leave sunny Syracuse and with it, John D.

I also am a graduate student at SU. I was two weeks into the new semester when the rear brake line on my '93 Jeep disintegrated. I went to John D's after consulting this website. All in all, I was very satisfied with the experience. As I dropped off my car, they told me what they believed the problem was and gave me a best and worst case scenario in terms of the work involved. Much to my surprise, the best case scenario prevailed.

They didn't ding me for any unnecessary inspection items just because the car is old. I've had shops tell me I needed ball joints or tie rod ends when I personally replaced them only a year ago.

I also visited John D's while I was an SU grad student. Bob was great! I had an engine light come on. Bob saw me right away; he told me that the problem would be expensive to fix, but that it didn't need to be done. He didn't charge me anything for figuring out the problem. Great service!
