Call 1

Chris Hawpe (Louisville, Kentucky) - 1990 Honda Civic

A transmission question. He blew the engine, put a used one in, drove for another year, sold it to his brother, who told him it was... a 5 speed. He thought it was a 4 speed. Is it possible that they put in a 5 speed with the new engine? Tom and Ray said yes-- and it's now time for a shift knob that shows 5 speeds.

Call 2

Call 3

Mary Fitch (Alexandria, Ohio) - 1999 Buick Regal

The engine has a super charger-- and she bought the car for her teenage daughter, who promptly got a speeding belt. Makes car too fast. However, the belt and pulley that run super charger are now broken. Should she get it fixed-- or not? The car appears to run fine. Tom and Ray thought there was no reason to bother to get it fixed.

Call 4

Kunti (Springfield, Missouri) - 1995 Ford Explorer Sport

Kunti's got a brake problem- a slow shuddering when she brakes. Pedal feels like it

Call 5

A clutch question. His '35 GMC pickup was handed down from his grandfather. It needs to be double-clutched. How do you double clutch? He grinds the transmission when he shifts it. Tom and Ray explained double-clutching, so the Ed can lose the "Grinderman" nickname.

Bill Coombs (Allentown, Pennsylvania) - 2000 Toyota Camry

Bill had a run-in with a concrete barrier on the turnpike. He cracked the back bumper cover, fixed it with duct tape. Found replacement bumper covers for 40.39 on Internet. Could he replace it himself and save hundreds over the estimate? Tom and Ray's advice? Get a breakdown of the estimates... but why not enjoy the matching duct tape on the car, and forget about doing the repair?

Rose McIntyre (San Diego, California) - 1988 Toyota Corolla

suspension/steering growling, grinding noise when she

Kathleen Scheinel (, Oregon) - Buick

A driving question. She want to give a device to her husband and sons for the holidays that would tell him when he is tailgating. Tom and Ray didn't think one was available. Their advice? Nag him... and make sure he leaves enough room. In the mean time, maybe some MIT engineers will design it.
