Attempting to return home to Laramie, Wyoming, from St Louis, my wife & I experienced engine trouble about ten miles east of North Platte, Nebraska. Two young women picked us up & delivered us to Carrol's Auto Repair after one of the women (the one not driving) called her grandmother by cell phone for a recommendation of a reliable towing & repair shop. (The other one in town she said would cost us an arm, a leg, & a head.) We arrived at Carrol's at about 4:30 PM on a Thursday. The shop is owned & operated by three generations of mechanics. The youngest family member promptly departed to fetch back our ailing '96 Ford Taurus. Towing cost us $45 for the hookup & $1.25/mile (20 miles roundtrip). He was back in about half an hour. The mechanic quickly determined that the problem was a seized-up idler pulley. After a brief trip to a parts store & replacement of the idler & a new serpentine belt (total parts cost of $50), addition of coolant, testing of the system while checking for any other possible problems - everyone remained more than half an hour after closing time - we were back on our way in less than two hours. Total bill came to $215. Friendly, informative service, but only cash accepted (no checks or credit cards); fortunately we had enough cash with us to pay.
