The shop is near Ft. Bragg. Once a visiting speaker had car trouble after his speech (Make of that what you will) and Larry told him the problem was covered under warranty, and the guest didn't have to pay him to fix it. He could just take it to the dealer and get it fixed free. After he replaced the head gaskets on my VW Vanagon I drove it 120 miles and the oil light came on. I was about to buy a new engine for it, but he said he would tow it back to his shop and fix it, since he felt responsible. When he couldn't get a new engine block for it I sold it to him for parts. I let him have it for the $1500 he had in it out of his own pocket. He specializes in foreign cars, but he can work on American vehicles if he has to.

Larry is the kind of mechanic that everyone claims to want. He fixes the problems, without "searching" for better ways to charge you more. If you have a bad spark plug wire, he won't replace the set of eight and charge you for them. He's not afraid to tell you that "he doesn't have a clue" at the first glance. But then he'll spend the time to actually troubleshoot! He's not afraid to tell you what he can't do. He doesn't charge zillions of dollars for "diagnostic" work. Particularly if he can't fix it. He's great with loyal customers. Friendly with the neighborhood kids. The best part is the 53 VW beetle that he has on top of a telephone poll. The very beetle that some bum staked out and lived in (while it was on top of the pole) for weeks in protest of something stupid. Something like whirled peas or some such.
