Mike and his staff are not only hands-on experienced but have technical knowledge well beyond just the turning of a wrench or the hanging of parts. It is most convenient to have the use of one of their loaner cars. A look at their offices, service bays and yard, and you will readily see the discipline of the organization as evidenced by the cleanliness and order of the facility.

Good mechanics, great owner, great service, fair prices, honest advice - even when you might not like hearing it!

Have used Mike Byer for 15 years -- major and minor repairs to Toyota and before that Ford. Use them with confidence. Mike is known locally as ethical, comptetent and fair.

As the owner of a 1997 Pontiac Gran Prix GTP, I have had lots of need for Mike over the past 10 years. He is always clear about the problem (I'm a non-mechanically minded female), and careful to be sure I understand what it means to repair or replace. His repairs "take" -- I have never had to go back to him for a re-do. I trust him implicitly to tell me when I've put enough money into this baby and need to get a new car. I've also taken used cars to his shop for pre-purchase evaluation and he has been honest, prompt and accurate.

Mike Byer's has worked on three different cars for me. They always explain the problems clearly, and respond to my questions with respect.

Here's the situation: My wife went to Asheville to meet some family who were coming from Atlanta, and I stayed home in West Virginia to work. No sooner does she roll into town than she starts to hear a loud clanking from under the hood. Sounds like rocks in blender. She calls me (back home in WV), and I pull up this very website to try to find a mechanic that can help in time, so her vacation's not ruined. I call up and explain what's going on, my wife's stuck with two young kids, doesn't know the area, etc. Not only does the guy answering the phone at Mike's say he'll look at it that same day (it was about noon when I called), but they *drove* down to where she was to make sure it was safe to drive over to the garage. They fixed the problem, and it was ready by the next morning (ahead of schedule, even though they were slammed). I can't thank these guys enough. They went *above and beyond* in the service department, and anyone with a car in or near Asheville ought to be giving them their business.

I pulled into Asheville for a whirlwind 24 hour visit with family members vacationing there. The moment I got off the highway my engine fan started banging to wake the dead. I was traveling by myself with 2 small children and it just really wasn't the time for car trouble. There are convenient times? My husband, 300 miles away, found Mike Byer's shop on the Car Talk forums and gave him a call. Here is what Mike Byer personally did for me: - He came to inspect the car to ensure I could drive it to the shop, saving me a towing bill. - He took the time, even though they were completely covered up, to explain exactly what the problem was, and get the car in there. - He was friendly & respectful, even though I don't know much about cars. - He gave me a loaner car, thereby completely salvaging my mini vacation. - He & his staff had my car fixed and ready to go within 24 hours. I actually made my planned departure time. The thing that struck me most about Mike & crew was that I felt like I wasn't about to get taken. I don't generally trust mechanics because I am so totally out of my element and I have been taken advantage of over cars many, expensive times. Not this time. When the car breaks down again, I sure hope it's in Asheville! -
