I took my wife's Mazda Tribute to Jason't Tire and Auto for a second opinion. I had taken her car to the dealership for some routine maintenance and they called and told me that her brakes were "code red", the rotors were un- cuttable, and gave me an estimate of $495 to replace pads and rotors. I searched Cartalk.com for a nearby mechanic and found Jason's. He told me it would cost $295 to replace the pads and rotors. I made an appointment. After he inspected, he called and said that we didn't need brakes at all. While the rotors are at the minimum tolerance and will not be able to be cut, there's no reason to replace now because the pads still have 30% left. Advised that I bring the car back in 15-20 k miles and do them both then. I'm not a "car guy" and he could have easily done the work and made some quick money off of me. He's found a long term customer. All shops should operate under the same honest philosophy.
