These guys are like Rasputin when it comes to diagnosing problems - they don't give up. Their exploits are legendary in Kansas City. Just one example: They were the only garage that was able to fix an engine problem by replacing a trailer hitch (the wrong size hitch ball was sending a false knock signal to the computer when the trailer was hooked up). They also managed to figure out that a combination of malfunctioning cruise control, engine idle, and antiā€“lock brakes was caused by somebody having put the wrong tail light bulb in the car. They don't give their services away free, but if they can't figure out and fix your problem, you may as well just leave your car sitting in front of a crack house for the scavengers.

THEY GOT THE '85 DODGE PICKUP I INHERITED RUNNING WELL AFTER I HAD TAKEN IT TO TWO OTHER PLACES. THE PROBLEMS WERE PROBABLY NOT THAT UNUSAL FOR A VEHICLE THIS OLD(BAD SPARK PLUG WIRES, AGED DISTRIBUTOR CAP) BUT THEY WERE MISSED BY THE OTHER TWO SHOPS. THESE GUYS NOTICED THE PROBLEM IN ABOUT 5 MINUTES. AFTER REPLACING THE PART AND ADJUSTING THE CARB, THE OLD TRUCK RAN GREAT. I HAD AN EARLIER, SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WITH THIS GUYS INVOLVING MY 85 TOYOTA CAMRY. THEY ARE THE ONLY PLACE AROUND THAT HAVE ONE OF THOSE ENGINE VACS (I THINK THEY ARE SOLD BY SNAP-ON). THEY USED IN ON THE TOYOTA.

Duke and Bob's came highly recommended to me by a female co- worker. Since I bought my car, I've taken it to them for all my repair needs and I have been very happy with the way they have treated me and my car. I've had plenty of experiences with mechanics who overcharged me or sold me things I didn't need and I have never had this experience with Duke and Bob's. They've always been very honest and straightforward with me. I appreciate that they always take time to explain exactly what they are doing and to answer my questions. They also do very good work.

Don't take your car to these guys unless you want it fixed right, want a full explanation, and thorough work. Owner is multi-degreed college grad (including Physics), teaches automotive courses at the college level, and is an Automotive Consultant to research institutions and government agencies. The manager is his step-son, and a chip off the same block. Absolutely ALL employees (owner, manager, and technicians) are ASE Certified, with the majority holding the L-1 (Level One) Advanced Certificate. They have more diagnostic equipment than a lot of dealerships, maybe more than God. If you really want to excite them, tell 'em you've been to several other shops and no one can fix it. It gets their juices flowing! I have been in this shop when one technician was talking to a competitor in Topeka, while another tech was talking to a shop in rural Missouri-- trying to help other shops fix cars! They aren't cheap, but the really good shops never are! Once you've visited this shop, you will consider them "friends", not mechanics. And these guys really aren't mechanics--they are truly technicians.

They have fixed Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Fords, Jeeps, Hondas, a Toyota, and an Opel for me and my family. They really understand cars and good sense.

Their work is first rate and I don't think they are out to deceive anyone. They diagnose problems correctly, tell you up front what they will charge, and then do the repair correctly and on time. The problem with this shop is that their hourly rates are too high ($80/hour). Some perfectly good shops charge only half that. Of course since they are competent you can still end up saving money because they do it right the first time. So I go to them when I have difficult problems and go to my corner garage for routine maintenance.

The most recent example of Duke and Bob's honest and reliability: My wife's car, which is 14 years old, needed a new distributor, which they said would cost about $1000. With the value of her vehicle coming in at around $700 according to the insurance company, we weren't sure we wanted to put that much into the car. We asked Brian at Duke and Bob's to do us a favor and look over the vehicle and let us know if he thought it would last much longer if we went ahead with the new distributor. He called back an hour later and told us it seemed pretty solid, but that we would probably need to put another $1500 into it within the next 6 months, as the brakes and tires were getting close to the end. So our total cost to get the car up and going would be closer to $2500. Brian and my wife and I all thought that wasn't worth doing. In giving this advise, Duke and Bob's, through their honesty, cost themsleves that work. But they gained our future patronage.

I wouldn't take my cars anywhere else. They have no problem working on older cars, which is important when you're trying to keep a 1993 Altima and a 1984 Toyota running until the kids get out of collge.

Don't let the sketchy appearance of the outside of the shop fool you - they are very friendly, quite knowledgeable guys. Just an oil change, but were willing to check other things over without extra charge, and give good advice. Thanks CarTalk!
