Tuan is amazing!! Probably the only great mechanic I've ever used. All the others have been a collection of shysters and lunatics with a few marginally honest gents mixed in. The most telling sign of his good work is that the walls of the cramped office are covered in grease stained cards and letters of all sizes from customers thanking him for saving them money on repairs.(One left with a $40 repair that fixed the problem when another shop recommended replacing the engine for $2400!) Tuan is the only mechanic I have ever considered sending a Christmas card to and that is saying alot. The shop doesn't look like much located just off of University Avenue but they do excellent work. The owner, Tuan, is a Hmong immigrant who takes tremendous pride in making sure you get what you pay for. His prices are VERY reasonable and as he says, "I always want to see the car and make sure what you need before I give you a quote". The last time I was there was because Precision Tune Auto had showed me a bad tie rod end on my Elantra after an oil change and recommended replacing both tie rod ends and lower ball joints, totalling $650. Tuan quoted me $300 for these repairs. Tuan looked at the car and said in reality only the one tie rod end had failed prematurely. The others were still tight and only the bad one needed replacement. This dropped the quote from $300 to $94. He later found that my brake pads and rotors were shot. I was leery of course as he told me this over the phone (This seems to be the biggest scam among mechanics I've used). I went ahead and had him replace them anyway. I was SO SUPRISED when I came to pick up the car and he had saved both rotors and pads to prove to me that they were indeed shot! (They'd been metal on metal for quite a while, Ooops, my bad!). Adding this to the quote raised my total cost to $284, not too shabby. In the end I saved over $300 off what the other shop wanted, got only the repairs I needed, and repaired another problem I didn't know I had as well. I would reccomend Tuan to anyone looking for a mechanic you can trust at an excellent price. My only reservations are the distance from my house (20 miles), the marginally sketchy neighborhood, and the fact that Tuan himself is pretty hard to understand over the phone due to his accent. There is always someone there you can ask to talk to who speaks better English though and Tuan is not too shy to hand the phone over if the point isn't getting across. The other nice thing about their shop (which I'm sure is an OSHA nightmare) is that if you have a question about a repair they will often bring you back and explain the problem while the car is on the lift. To me this is invaluable in learning about the parts I don't know much about and in building trust.

I took my Toyota here on the strong recommendation of a friend. I took my car in to get the heater fixed. Not only did they fix it promptly and cheaply, they also inflated my tires and greased a squeaky wheel for me free of charge. Great things about Tuan's: 1. Cheap! It only cost $100. 2. Fast - I brought it in at 9 and it was done by 11, on the Monday before Thanksgiving. 3. Conveniently located. It's right on the 16 and 21 buses. It's also across from the Midway Shopping Center, so you could run some errands or just hang out in Borders while your repair is done.

Tuan Auto Service fixed the cracked radiator on my wife's Taurus for about half of what the Ford dealership quoted us (including one part that the dealership said would cost over $100...Tuan charged us less than $10 for the same part). They were able to finish the work the same day (and even didn't charge us for the oil change when we had to wait an extra 20 minutes). It's on several bus lines and will be on the Central Corridor light rail line eventually. I would definitely recommend Tuan to anyone who needs some car repair.

The only sad part about buying my Prius is that Tuan can no longer service my car. I almost didn't buy the car solely for that reason. Has always been fair and provides excellent service.
