Along with a number of friends who also own aging Hondas, I have been very, very impressed with the service. I am currently undergoing a mysterious car problem (time to call Car Talk?). Steve tried a whole variety of things on my car for two days, couldn't find what made it die and come back to life, and didn't charge me a penny. Most mechanics probably would have cleaned out my wallet telling me I needed things I didn't. When they do charge for repairs, prices are very reasonable. He discussed my car's situation in plain English without making me feel dumb. I recommend Hamline-Hoyt to anyone for general repairs and checkups. If it's something beyond the scope of their shop (e.g., major electrical repairs), they suggest where to go.

My family has used Steve & his crew for several years and found that sometimes he does not charge when he should... We have taken Hondas, Mercurys, a Ford and a Dodge Caravan to them... We are moving to another area of the Twin Cities but are going to continue to use Hamline Hoyt as long as they will take our cars...

Steve is a great mechanic who has worked on three of my cars. He is honest and stands behind the work he does.

My ABS light was coming on intermittantly and I took it to my FORMER Service shop (who I've been dis-satisfied with before) who wanted to charge me $100 just to look at it. They also gave me the impression I needed to check it out ASAP or I I could be in danger. Anyway, I didn't want to pay that for something I wasn't sure was an issue yet, so I thought I'd check other shops. I went to Hamline/Hoyt (because of the stellar recommendations from this site!) and they told me I might be losing my ABS brakes, but that I still had my "normal" breaks -- and made me feel better about holding off til the intermittant light was more consistent. Then, they spent an hour driving it and trying to figure out the issue, looking for logs in the ABS computer, and didn't find anything. When I picked it up - they didn't charge me a cent! They said I should bring it back when the light is on consistently so they can't figure out the problem.... but they didn't want to charge me for something they didn't help me with. They just got themselves a new customer... and if/when this issue occurs, I'm going back to them!

These guys were great! I had an appointment to fix one problem, but the day before noticed another (brakes). Although they are busy, they were still able to fix everything in one day. Also, the price was very good, compared to other quotes I had received.

I am a young single female. In the past, I have been to mechanics who look at me and just see dollar signs. I have never felt taken advantage of due to my gender at Hamline-Hoyt. Everyone in the shop is friendly and will take the time needed to explain what is wrong with my vehicle and the cost of the repair. I would definitely recommend them to any friends and family in need of a good honest mechanic.

Needed new tires, they shopped around for a good pair at the best price, and got them in the next day. If I'd gone in that morning, they probably would have had me rolling that afternoon. They're friendly, and have a great sense of humor, too.

We brought our subaru to Hamline-Hoyt to have the clutch and the struts replaced. We looked at their reviews in the Mechanics Files and since it is really close to home and they had good reviews we decided to go with them. We made an appointment and told them specifically what needed to be replaced. The first time we had the car in they ended up having it for two days, the first day they told us that we did not actually need to have our clutch replaced and didn't do any actual work. The next day I called them to find out how their progress was coming and they had now decided that we did actually need a new clutch, but still had not done any work. They had a story about how their computers were down and they couldn't get any parts. I picked the car up that evening and made a new appointment to have the clutch and struts replaced. They told me that they needed two days to do the work. The next time I brought the car in with a scheduled two day appointment to have the work done, they kept the car for two days and only got the clutch replaced (at the cost of $1500). The struts still not having been touched. So now they have had the car for four days total and have only completed one of the two jobs I had originally requested. I paid for the clutch and have never returned. I really wanted to like them because of the proximity to my house, but I just cannot recommend them and will not use them again.

We bring our vehicles (Subaru Forester and Ford Taurus) to the shop and have been since we moved to the neighborhood 5 years ago. I LOVE this shop. They don't suggest or perform unnecessary work, they are almost always on time, they are kind and patient, and they do good work. When we were buying a used car, we brought the two cars we were looking at in for a check over, and they helped us identify issues and made suggestions based on future work and the quality of the make and model. It was SO helpful. I've even just called them for advice when I was having trouble jumping my car. Such a friendly wonderful neighborhood shop. It is refreshing to not feel like I have to play defense with a mechanic!
