Pete is a find, we're gonna keep him. We bought a Land Rover Discovery through E-Bay (If you want to do a story on that just call me) and found that it had a bad engine. Pete went out of his way to find us an engine and then installed it on Memorial Day weekend himself because his head mechanic was on vacation. Pete has always been up front with us telling us the good and the bad news about the Rover. He will also tell you what needs to be replaced NOW, what can wait a bit, and what to watch for in the long haul. Again, Pete is a find.

Ever heard of a mechanic who brought the job in under the estimate? How in the heck does Pete make his boat payments? Not by figuring out the cheapest way that makes sense. Of course he did tell me what he saw coming in terms of repairs but insisted they didn't need to be done now. I like that he took the time to show me what parts needed replacing and why. He sort of apologized that he couldn't show the part that 'must've fallen off somewhere'. I just moved here and all my friends said 'take your car to Pete's'. Now I know why!

Pete has been the mechanic for my family for the last 15 years and has never let us down. He is without a doubt the most knowledgable German automobile mechanic and genuine person I have ever met. The best example I can think of is this: he did some muffler work on my '87 Audi a year ago and when a problem arose with it again, he spent the time to dig through his records to check to see that it was under warranty. Not only that, but he was the person who filled out my warranty card and sent it in. I have to believe that he is one of the finest VW/Audi mechanics in the midwest. I still have him do all of my mechanical work, even though I have to drive 2 and 1/2 hours.

Pete kept my '85 Golf going for the past 14 years. He often would diagnose my problem over the phone and is always right. If you are looking for an honest mechanic, Pete gets my vote.

Pete, and two of his mechanics I know (Kevin and John) are all throwbacks to the genius tinkerers that used to work on cars. They all know their stuff. Kevin's dad was the original renaisance man who used to work on my Porsche. My wife is a middle eastern dancer who has "Tzigane" as her personalized license plate. Kevin knew that it meant "Gypsy dancer" in Hungarian. John has done work for me since 1977 when I raced my Datsun 510 in SCCA events. Now he fixes all my cars. Pete is unbelievably honest and will tell you why things are (and why things aren't). Pete always charges a fair price and makes sure the work is right the first time. He's gone way out of his way to help me with ordering parts I have installed myself, as well as given me good advice when I'm stumped in my garage at home (often). When he isn't on two phone lines at once, he's under a hood consulting with one of his mechanics. This is a great shop. Given the number of responses to his shop posted on this site, I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Pete has always been a great guy to take a car to. He is also great at explaining things - what needs to be done now and what can probably wait (at least most of the time). He has an excellent knowledge of most foreign cars and has an excellent following of satisfied customers. I always feel safe in recommending Pete.

Pete and his mechanics look out for their customers more than their bottom line. I had an old (1970's vintage) Volvo that another shop in town "looked at", didn't diagnose the problem, and charged me $140. Pete took one look at it and in 5 minutes correctly diagnosed the problem and advised me to not spend any more money on the car because it was too rusted out to be safe. The other shop never even suggested that the vehicle wasn't safe to drive. I really trust these guys!

In past experiences, I have always had problems with finding a mechanic I could totally trust (cost, prob. actually needed to be fixed, and integrity of work). I feel extremely confident that I can trust the owner Pete Conway in any situation, whether its recommending a new car, or telling me that I can get away without repairing when I know other shops would jump at the opportunity. This is not the fanciest shop nor the biggest, to tell you the truth it's really quite small, but they do great work, are honest, and are reasonably priced. I think its a great sign when a shop does absolutely no advertising, except for the one line in the phone book, but yet is always busy. If I stay in the LaCrosse area, I belive this will be the last shop I will ever take my vehicles to. Sincerley, Keith P Ryan
