Alan has the best "bed side" manner I've ever seen with a mechanic. As a woman, I've encountered some sleezy mechanics in my day. Alan takes the time to explain things thoroughly and without any pressure. He runs the shop with his wife, Ann (who will take you back and forth to work while the work is being done). I referred my whole office to Alan for everything from oil changes to clutch work. i just wish he did body work too...

Alan is terrific. Repair charges have consistently been below my fears. Alan takes plenty of time to explain the repairs, shows customers the old parts, and provides great written documentation. He was a full partner in keeping my 1987 Chevy Nova running to 200,000 miles with only routine maintenance and essential repairs. And to top that off, his shop provides rides to and from work for those of us from 1-car households!

These guys are great. They're friendly and genuine (i.e. the friendliness isn't fake), and they'll do their best to get you fixed quickly and for the least amount of money possible. I've been to them twice, partially because they fixed my "check engine light" problem only temporarily, and they had to take another look at it. But they gave an honest effort the first time--and DID fix it temporarily--plus, after the second visit, my Corolla runs better than it has in more than two years. If they'd fixed it better the first time, I'd give them a super-thumbs up; as is, I still give them a thumbs up. They're honest, fair and competent, which is pretty awesome for any mechanic.

I found out about this place from this very website, and I wanted to add my comments that this is a great shop run by two very competent people, Alan and his wife, Ann. Alan has done my state inspection, changed my oil twice and put on four new snow tires. He's very good at what he does, good at explaining what is required and reasonably priced. I appreciate this website being here to help people new to town find a good mechanic!

Alan and Ann are GREAT! We've been bringing cars there since I was too little to even remember. Alan and his team take great care of my 98 Volvo! Every time I go, Alan shows me the parts he replaced and why they needed to be fixed. I've been so thrilled that I even wrote my college essay on them (got in to my top school too!) I've recommended several people to them and everyone has had positive experiences too! Ann is such a friendly face when you walk in the door. I trust that Alan knows the difference between immediate fixes and things that can wait, and have never been led astray. I'll never go anywhere else in the Burlington area.

We have been going to Al at AL-ANs since they were on Williston Road years ago. When they moved we continued to go to them. Al is incredibly honest and competent and his wife Ann runs a tight ship and is always friendly. We recommend them to everyone we know. We've not only had all our cars fixed there, but we've purchased cars from them. He is always forthright and honest about the vehicle that is for sale. Wouldn't go to anyone else. :-)

I have a 95 Ford Escort with about 190k miles on it and got the crazy idea that I would like to drive it around (literally all the way around) the country. I spoke with Al (head mechanic) and asked him what repairs I would need to make to get this beater around the country. Rather than laugh at me, Al told me exactly what repairs HAD to be made, what repairs he recommended but were not vital and what repairs I could do if I wanted to give my car, "The Cadillac Treatment." I made only the necessary repairs (all within 20 bucks of what he quoted me - amazing). Not only has my car made it around the country, but it made it from Burlington, VT to Oakland, CA (over some of the highest passes in the Rockies) with a full load of gear. Thanks Al and An!

I have been taking all my repairs to them for at least 7 years now. This includes a Honda, an Olds, and a Subaru. I trust them to find the problem and fix it. I also take them all my routine maintenance. Unlike some other places, they NEVER add on unnecessary services. Even if they recommend something 5 times, they will tell me whether it has to be done or whether I can save the money if I don't mind the oil leaking in my garage. :)

Al-an's is a great place to take my old Mazda, still kickin' with 180,000 miles on it. Like Click and Clack, when you describe a problem with your car to Al he can tell you right away what needs to be done. They are honest, friendly, and have an adorable cat in their office!
