It is a moderately big shop that does everything important.. basic maintenance all the way to major rebuild work. I've been dealing with them since 1987 when we moved to Springfield VA. The mechanics are a mix of old school guys who've been there since forever and a few youngin's just learning the trade. They rebuilt the engine in my 1988 Mustang in 1993 for less than $800.00 when everyone else said I needed to buy a rebuild for about $2,000. Merv's rebuild worked another 10 years and 80,000 miles. Better than Ford. They do no body work. I don't know if they respond well when they screw something up... because they don't screw up. These guys really know what they are doing. They identified a flaw in my 2003 Toyota 4Runner transmission that was still under warrantee... and as a result I got a new transmission from Toyota.. for free.

Merv's Auto Repair has been fixing, rebuilding and maintaining cars since the early 1980s. And YES, there is an actual guy named Merv who owns the place and also works on cars. I found them from a neighbor who had the engine in his Caravan rebuilt in 1987. They are a large shop with many mechanics who specialize in different makes and components. Japaneese, American, European, antique, all makes and years get treated well. They treat my 1994 Jeep just as well as the 1957 Corvette and near exotic Italian jobs. When a Ford dealer told me that our 7 year old 1988 Mustang needed an engine replaced, Merv and his mechanics repaired it for less than half, and it ran perfectly for at least another 75,000 miles when I sold it. They replaced the tranfer case in our Jeep, repaired a door that was falling off due to abuse, installed modified air shocks to the Jeep, replaced mufflers, pipes, catalytic converters, done brake rebuilds etc. You name it. Escept, they won't do state inspections. These are the guys you take your car to to have it fixed if it failed. They offer one service that I have used often. If your car needs a state inspection they will take it to be inspected at a garage nearby if you are having regular maintenance done on the car... at no extra charge. I have never had a car serviced by these guys fail to pass.

Merv's always does a great job on vehicles and their prices are more than reasonable when compared with dealerships and some competitors who are not as reputable. My family has been going to them for years, with everything from a domestic sedan to a highly temperamental import (by brand, not due to their lack of expertise), and they have always treated us well. Their garage is no-frills, but who wants to pay extra for a fancy waiting room and imported coffee or drinks? I'd much rather give them my vehicle and then come back when it's done than hang out in a pseudo-lounge area at the dealership, only to have a bill two to three times the price handed to me. You cannot go wrong with Merv's for a job done well, fairly, and honestly. If the part can be fixed, Merv will fix it as opposed to replacing it for many times the cost. Mechanics such as this one are few and far between, but I'm glad that they're in business.

I've gone to Merv's for at least 10 years. They work on all 5-6 cars in our familly. They are extremely honest. When I first went there, I would ask for service such as a tune up and they would argue me out of it. If it didn't NEED doing, they didn't want to waste my money. When I've been trying to keep an old car going, they would find used parts to help keep the cost down. They always ask when I need the car back and let me know if schedule is a problem. I've never had them screw something up. They keep records on each of my cars so they have a repair history. They are friendly, explain car problems to me, and are open late to pick up a car after work.

After many years of looking for an honest, reliable, competent mechanic and not having much luck, I finally can to this website and saw Merv's on this list close to my house. After reading the reviews and calling and talking to the shop, I took my 2002 Mazda B-3000 pick up to them. I had recently had my brakes done at another shop and I felt that it was not done properly. Merv's looked it over for me, adjusted and check the entire braking system. Found a faulty piece in the back (drum) brakes. They flushed my radiator for almost 1/2 the price of another shop in Alexandria. They even looked at my side mirror switch for free. All in all, I drove off in a fully functioning vehicle and finally felt good aboout going to a mechanic. They are very friendly and took time to explain everything all the work done. The owner was on hand and came over to make sure I was taken care of. I'm really really happy I found these guys. I highly recommend them to others and I will definitely bring my truck back here
