When SpiffyLube rounded off the oil drain plug in my old Volvo and couldn't remove it, they sent the car to Vern's, in Kirby, for repair. I picked it up there and discovered a gem of a shop. Like Alice's Restaurant, "it's around the back, just a half a mile from the railroad track." It's hard to find, but worth the effort. My AC compressor was making squealing noises. I was prepared for a heart-stopping repair bill. "Wrong compressor belt," the Vern's mechanic diagnosed. He fixed it for $37. When I began losing coolant in my Ford Windstar, with no external leaks, I gritted my teeth for the blown head gasket repair. "More likely the intake gasket – at the back right corner," J.D. guessed, then tested and confirmed his diagnosis. $615 rather than half the Blue Book value of the van. J.D. saved the parts he'd replaced and patiently explained what and why. This place looks like the ol' timey garage that it is. No service writer. No customer waiting area. But the folks are polite and eager to please, and my car has been fixed right and on time whenever I've used them.

I've been impressed with their honesty. Things that supposedly needed to be done according to the dealer were on parts that my car doesn't even have. Vern's did only the necessary work at a more than reasonable cost. Being a female, I am always concerned about being cheated by mechanics, but I have never felt uneasy at Vern's. As my car needs work, I will return to Vern's.

I thought Vern's Auto Repair would be my go-to place for auto repairs; however, its employees were neither friendly nor honest about what they did to my vehicle. Notably, on several occasions, the mechanics glared at me (sternly) for several seconds. It was odd, and it made me second guess my decision to hire this shop. After the routine inspection, problems started cropping up: engine problems, faulty breaks, and odd mechanical noises. They provided me with a 12,000-mile warranty, but I don't trust them enough to return. My backup plan was the Dealer Alternative; however, after my experience with Vern's Auto, I chose to go elsewhere. I eventually found an honest mechanic.
