Ray's already listed in your file, but I've used him for several years and thought some of his rating categories were a little off. I.e.: He's got only one square for "convenient to public transportation" -- he's across the street from a bus stop, for cryin' out loud! I also thought Ray deserved a higher rating on "fair price" and "explains the problem" - I've never had a more fair and honest mechanic; he's made several minor repairs for free, his prices are always reasonable, and he stands behind his work TOTALLY - never an argument, quibble or obfuscutory circumlocution. Ray's the real deal.

My wife and I have gone here for 20 plus years. Always honest and reasonable. I read all the reviews. Yes, you can find other places cheaper, but if you want honesty and a man who backs up everything he says, this is the place. He treats my wife and daughters just as he treats me.

My first contact with Belmont Garage: The timing belt on my car broke in 1997 & a neighbor recommended Belmont Garage. I am embarrassed to admit that I had been driving around with a leaking fuel pump that I thought I could not afford to fix (yes, I knew this was terribly dangerous [not to mention bad for the environment] but I was very poor at the time). I had to have a running car & scrounged up the money to have the timing belt fixed but not the fuel pump, which didnt render the car undrivable. I told Mr. Lewis this when he called to discuss the required work. Mind you, he didnt know me from Adam (or Eve) this was the first time Id patronized his shop yet he said that because the leaking pump was so dangerous he would fix both the belt & the pump & I could pay him back over time. I was both amazed & embarrassed & came up with funds to fix both, & fell practically in love with Mr. Lewis & have patronized him ever since. It is so great to have a mechanic who I trust absolutely because he is absolutely honest, & also a really nice guy. No one at his shop has ever talked down to me (this matters to women). Also, he works on high-end cars, but has never embarrassed me because I drive such an old, disreputable vehicle (an 87 Mitsubishi), & has done a great job keeping it running (I subscribe to the idea that it is always cheaper to fix a car than buy a new one).

I wish Belmont Garage could be my repair shop because it would be so convenient, but alas I doubt I'll go back. I'd rather drive a ways to a shop I can feel good about. We have tried 3 times, but it has never been a commendable experience. Overpriced, and their customer service skills are not up to par. I believe that I was treated differently as a woman, though for all I know it's that way for everyone. It's the prices and the uncaring attitude that have turned me away. They've been there many years, so I suppose they must have repeat customers. Personally I do not feel comfortable there.

I have used Ray Lewis's Belmont garage for close to 20 years! He is great. He will give me a ride home if he isn't busy( 1 mile away). Sometimes I just walk home if the weather is nice. I have used his services on several different cars and have always been pleased. I would highly reccommend Belmont Garage.

I had my car towed to Ray's shop when I couldn't figure out what happend to my car. It stayed there overnight 2 days and there were no problems. When I told them what happened the found the problem within the hour and called me to authorize the repairs. I was so pleased that I had them go ahead and do a tune up while they were at it. They found several problems that they called me first before they fixed them. I ran their pricing past my mechanic in Chicago and he thought they were extremely resonable. I will always take my car there.

I've come to know Ray Lewis as "Ray", as he's worked on our cars for over 15 year, old Mazda, newer one, Buick, & old Izuzu. He always calls to give the diagnosis & estimated cost before proceeding. Although I usually take the cars in, he treats my wife as well as me (Walter, who is mentioned by one reviewer, did not work there very long). I've also suggested checking something out (eg brakes, hoses, belts), and more than once been told that they're fine and am given an estimate of the life left -- they could have sold me unneeded reparis easily. On maybe a couple of occasions over 15 years, something didn't get fixed quite right, and Ray has always taken the vehicle back in and fixed it right without question and with apologies. He has mechanics who've been with him a long time and are good.
