I work on my own cars, but if I get in a bind, I've called on Paul at Peake's. They work on all makes, and have an impressive shop. He specializes in radiators and AC, and is also a closet Volvo specialist. I gave him the a-arms from my Volvo to pull and replace the bushings with parts that I provided. This is an unpleasant task, and they were froze so bad that they needed to be burned out with a torch. He charged $80 for 4 bushings. An acceptable deal, I thought. One time, I had a 90 Ford van that my uncle gave me. It didn't run, and I needed the AC (R12) discharged so that I could pull the motor (not a fun job on a van). They made a house call, lugging their AC recovery machine with them and evacuated the AC for like 30 bucks (even though they only got 1/2# of R12 to recycle). I took the radiator from same vehicle to him to have leak-checked. He did full cleaning and pressure check - it passed, and he didn't "invent" any leaks that needed fixed. Seems honest. I imagine he cringes a little when I visit 'cause he can tell I'm a cheapskate.

Work was well done and in a timely manner, but the costs were higher than they should have been. Labor charges were high, but acceptable. Unfortunately, they charged me TWICE the high-end retail price for the parts and FOUR TIMES the cost of the parts from most online parts suppliers. The work here is good, but expect to get over- charged.

Pretty honest, competent, not the cheapest. Will work to estimate, will work to reduce cost if you ask. Important to let them tell you what your car needs. If you argue or don't know what you are talking about, they are competent and you will make yourself out to be the fool.

Paul and his fellow mechanics are competent, hard-working, honest, and easy to work with. I have had them work on several Volkswagens, Audis, as well as a BMW and a Ford F- 150, with excellent results. They know and work on a lot of Volvos as well. If they miss a small detail, they are quick to rectify it, and are truly intent on doing a good job. There are not many shops in the State College area I would trust to work on more complex cars like my Audi, and they have been up to the task of keeping older VW and Audi cars at peak performance over the years. If you drive a lot of miles and are very particular about what you drive, and how it is maintained, you will likely pay more elsewhere and will have to put up with rudeness and incompetence such as most local dealers display in their repair shops. By the way, friends with expensive European cars all swear by Gemini Enterprises in State College as well, I would take my vehicles to them in the event Peakes were not equipped to service a particular problem. Gemini tends to be more expensive and has longer lead times for an appointment, however.

Paul and his staff have maintained my Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW cars for several years, and have always been honest, fair, and knowledgable. If he does not have the dealer tools, he can usually subcontract the work to somebody who does. I trust his mechanical judgement, and really recommend this shop for any import owners in the area, especially. Gemini Enterprises are very good, also, but Peakes are reasonably priced and pretty highly skilled.

I drive my cars until they die. I trust them to tell me when the work is more than the car is worth. I don't even bother having them call me before starting because I know the car needs it or they wouldn't recommend it. Over a period of many years, these guys have worked on five cars of different makes for me and I have never had a single complaint, so I don't know how they respond when they screw up. I suspect they would respond well.

Called for a quote on maintenance work and received detailed response of parts necessary and cost. Was able to schedule service within 24 hours. Paul called during service to confirm any additional repairs before proceeding, and vehicle was ready on time. Transparent and competent service. Will certainly return for vehicle maintenance in the future.
