Several years ago, I had a couple of very negative experiences with the service department at the local Toyota dealer. As a result, I stopped having regular service performed on my 4Runner (except for oil changes), and kept my fingers crossed. I was fairly fortunate for 3 years. But when the car did need service, I was delighted to find this section of the CarTalk web site. As I reviewed the many entries, I found that Hillside Imports was strongly recommended, especially in areas of being conservative about repairs, and being fair about pricing. My experience at Hillside exactly paralleled what I had read. The mechanic took time to explain what was required to repair my car. He went out of his way to find a used part so that I wouldn't have to pay 6x the price for a new part. He didn't repair/ replace parts I suggested might need repairing/replacing, saying he'd rather have me as a long-term customer, rather than a one-time customer. He gave me tips on operating my car for better performance. And he completed the repairs within the time frame he specified. I'm confident I would have paid 3-4x for the same work if I had returned to the dealer. And if you can't already tell, I wholeheartedly recommend Hillside Imports.

Rene takes the time to explain problems and how he can fix them. I called after hours once just to leave a message, and he was there and took plenty of time to talk to me. He and his father also have years of experience working at VW dealerships, and know the cars inside and out. They charge about half of what the dealers charge, though! (I know this the hard way-- taking my car to the dealerships before I knew about Hil

Rene does a great job and has a great service staff working for him. I've had to take the Eurovan in several times, (it's the van, not them) and I've always been satisfied with the job performed.

I had an engine light come on my dashboard at 4:55 on a Friday afternoon and I called Hillside Imports. They close at 5:00 - and I was fifteen minutes away. I was leaving on a road trip the next morning. They said to bring it in and they's hook up the diagnostics. They did. It wasn't a problem that needed to be fixed immediately. There was no charge for the service. The VW dealership where I bought my car - won't even look at a car for less that $87.50.

This shop is great! No one in the Portland Metro area is better, including and especially the stealerships.

I tried these guys instead of paying the gouging prices the only local Audi dealer charges. Hillside Imports diagnosed my newly developed coolant leak as a water pump failure and recommended that as long as all that work was going to be done, it would be a cost-saving strategy to change the timing belt at the same time. They completed the work as promised, took my credit card info over the phone and put the car where I could pick it up in off-hours. In fact, I never even met any of them and took care of all the details over the phone. I'll try them again for other repair or service on my Audi & my daughter is ready to try them for her VW Beetle when necessary. It's a wierd little place but a nice alternative to the dealers!

They are such a welcome relief especially compared to the local VW dealer. I would strongly recommend them.

Hillside Imports is the best car shop I have ever been to. We have been taking my 2000 Passat there every since the warranty expired. They fix everything that needs fixing. They know that we are on a budget, so check with us on anything out of the ordinary. They advise you on whether something needs to be fixed right away or it can wait. My seat heater stopped working and mentioned it on my last check up. Rene told me that it's a problem with Passats, and it will cost about $600 to fix, because they have to take the whole seat apart. He said they could do exploratory work to confirm this is the problem, but 99% of the time it is this issue. I had my engine light coming on all the time. I took my car in 5-6 times over the summer for this problem, they ended up taking the whole engine apart, and only charged me $2000. Extremely honest, nice people.
