John has been repairing my Toyotas since the early 80's. He's always done a fine job and has been especially helpful in emergencies. In the past he's thrown Christmas parties (recently summer cookouts) for his customers. He uses Toyota parts and won't do unnecessary work. He's a real throwback to a time when you dealt with the mechanic, not a service writer. I especially like his Woodstock decor. Even though our Toyotas have generally required few repairs over the years, I would be really up a creek if he were to close.

John is the owner of the shop and one of the mechanics. Not sure how long he has been in business but believe at least 20 years. I used him first as a mechanic for my 1986 toyota mr2, a car which semed challenging to the mechanics in my area and unable to fix reliably or cost effectively. John took care of the car until I finally retired it w/208,000 miles on it. I replaced it w/a 1998 subaru forester that he checked out for us before I bought it. He maintains that car. I used to go to the quicky oil change places (for oil change only) but now bring the cars to him as he gets the car in and out 1st thing in morning (opens at 8am) and checks the car and drives it before releasing it to me. Bought a second car from him, a 1995 subaru legacy which has been great for the 3 years we've owned it. John is honest, I feel that he really looks out for our safety but also does not do unnecessary work. He lets me know that in next 5000 miles or next time car is in for work, X may need to be done so I have time to budget for it. I have had work done on a handshake, couldn't pay bill in one shot and he let us pay over time until we had paid in full. He never brought it up, we had other work done while we owed him money and he trusted me that we would pay. He gives loaners and on one occasion, he had none, my car was taking longer than he thought, so he gave me his personal mercedes to drive for the day. When our subaru dies, we'll be buying our next car from him. He keeps a few subarus & volvos on the lot but will find whatever you want in price range previously agreed upon. Our car that we bought from him was worked on by him first and he guaranteed the car for 6 months or 3000 or 5000 miles (can't remember!) but is flexible on that as well, wants customer to be happy. He does work on american cars but specializes in foreign. He's old school, does quality work and I hope he never retires!

John is old school-one of the last guys I know who works on a handshake. the last time my car was, blew the head gasket, he painstakingly worked on my car and I had a loaner the entire time the car was in the shop. the price was more than fair and he always does great work. i never drive away afraid that my car will break down again, the job is ALWAYS done right.

John is an expert Volvo Tech. If he dowesn't do the work himself, he diagnoses/supervises all work. He has free (just top off the gas tank) loaner cars - old 240 wagons! His work is not cheap. Labor is $100 an hour. Parts are full boat retail, but best quality. You pay for his experience and expertise. However, the job is always done right the first time and he will give lots of helpful hints on how to keep your car running right.

John Kelemen is an auto expert that the local newspaper West Milford Messenger featured in their paper -"Ask the Expert".I called John and he was spot on diagnosing the problem with my VW Eurovan - engine light being on. After getting my local mechanic to verify the same problem and give me a price for the repair, I called John and he said my mechanic gave me a fair repair estimate. John is very knowledgable and he is very entertaining explaining repairs.

John and his staff are the best. I wouldn't take my cars anywhere else. Great waiting room with posters reminiscent of my mis-spent youth abound. When he had a very unusual and unanticipated problem with a repair, he was honest and forthright about it, adjusting the price to his detriment just to be fair to me. All other times, there are no problems and the repairs are done quickly and expertly.
