These guys are second only to Click and Clack, and merely by a nose. Washington Garage is a family owned business run by the Shanihans. I believe the garage is in its third generation. John is the father and his five sons work with him. John is wonderful, smart, honest, patient, thorough, and a great teacher. He will keep all the parts he removes from your car, and with them teach you exactly what broke, how it affects the rest of your car, and how he fixed the problem. He relishes in the teaching process, regarding men and women as equal students. Fortunately for us, his sons are cut from exactly the same mold. The son in which I have the most contact is Brian. He is just as wonderful as his father. I currently live in Maryland, and often will call him for a consultation, which he is happy to provide. He will instruct me on how to diagnose my car with his help over the phone, so if I can't drive my car to New Jersey for him to fix, I will know how not to get cheated. In fact, all of his phone diagnoses have been right on the money. Brian has taught me a great deal. In fact, he now refers to me as "The Mechanic". I trust him with more than my life, I trust him with my 11 year old car!!!

The first time they serviced my car Brian cheerfully drove me 20 minutes away to my appointment. As we drove, he diagnosed various noises and let me know what he'd be looking for. A month later, I was driving alone in the mountains far from home when the "check engine" light went on. I called the shop and Brian told me what to check. He patiently explained why I should not freak out. When I followed his instructions, the problem disappeared. He took the time to help me when there was no way he'd be making a nickle off this problem. I feel really comfortable recommending this shop.

My family found Washington Garage on the cartalk website, even though I worked right down the block from them in highschool. My 1994 Isuzu Rodeo needed some regular maintence work but I had a strange gas smell. When Brain looked at my car he called me and explained that my filler neck was rusted and he would get a replacement part. Unfortunately the part is no longer available, Brain then explained clearly and concisely what they could do to fix the problem, with a diagram. The work was done very quickly and for less than the price quoted. Since the repair is a band-aid until I can located a replacement part from a junk yard ( Isuzu no longer carries the part) he would like to see the vehicle in 2-3 months free of charge. The best part about this garage is that I normally have to claim the vehicle is my father's to keep mechanics from trying to sell me more work than I need. Brain on the other hand, spent twenty minutes talking about different cars with me as if I was a man. Any women should free like they are in great hands with the Shanahan Brothers.

I started going to the Washington Garage after reading the recommendations on this website. They are very accurate. The family which operates the garage is very friendly, honest, and eager to explain things. They have had the garage in the family since 1931. They pride themselves on being honest. I have only had good experiences.

DEC 2005: After my old Chevy S-10 Blazer sat unused for about 2 years, they did great check-up on everything...including repairing the cirulation fan that was clogged up with a critter's nest made of the engine insulation! I felt like they gave me an honest estimate and it came up a little less. I feel confident in bringing my car there again, really nice guys.

I found this wonderful shop and the wonderful people who work there from my friend's grandmother, as she was a customer of Washington Garage for well over 20 yrs. I have been going to these guys since 2004 and I regret that I have gone here sooner than that. The level of service, quality of work and competence of the Shanahan Bros. is the best around. You will not find a better place to care for your car. Brian and Tim and the rest of the crew take care of my 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue as if they own the car. Always very knowledgeable and thorough thru and thru. Whenever I go there, they always are friendly and just good all around people. I used to go to the dealer for service (which is like a big corporation who could really careless about your business) and now Washington Garage gives their customers a true, honest family commitment to your car. You could never go wrong in placing your trust and your car in the hands of the fine folks as Washington Garage.

I found Washington Garage on this site and have never regretted going there. They have always completed my work in a single day, and have never "found" extra things that needed to be fixed on my 12-yr-old car--in fact one time they talked my husband out of doing something on much his newer car. Yes, the brothers are talkers but they are super nice so I don't mind. Wouldn't dream of taking my car anywhere else.

A/C unit stopped working, got a quote, they fixed it. A week later, stopped working, brought it back. After they did some homework, I find that Honda had a silent recall on these a/c units. They fixed it again, they worked an entire day on the car, worked ever since, didn't charge a dime more. Currently helping me recoup repair fee from Honda. These three brothers know what they are doing, and will not rip you off. Nor will they "suggest" things that do not need to be done. Having moved here from NYC, I know all about auto mechanics ripoff scams... Also gave me a "gun owners" discount because of a bumper sticker on my car!
