The specific reason I would suggest Bruce Gray as a mechanic is that I have never trusted any service person more than him. He always calls me before replacing or fixing things we did not discuss, he gives straight forward advice as to whether something needs to be replaced immediately or not, and most importantly he will not over charge for anything. His honesty holds true with the rest of the employees. He takes into account how you would like your car to be maintained and repairs accordingly. I have dealt with many mechanics and I can honestly say Bruce Gray's integrity and quality of work are truly remarkable

Gray's Auto Service (http://www.graysserv.com/) was one of a few possible shops I found on the CarTalk website, that I considered taking my Jeep for repair. Their listings (2 listing for the same shop) have quite a few comments, all very good. They were recently given a special prestigious award by the Better Business Bureau for their excellence (no complaints for over 15 years -NONE). The BBB award recognizes such distinction in ANY business, so for an auto repair shop to get it, competing (so to speak) with other less 'risky' businesses over a two-start region, is pretty amazing, and says a lot about 'em. Bruce Gray (owner) and his people went out of their way to advocate for me in dealing with a third party warranty company, getting the repairs (pretty major) covered. They kept me informed, let me make decisions for myself (with his advice if I asked), and completed the job quickly and correctly. It's not possible to overstate how strongly I recommend Gray's Auto Service.

Great diagnosis of wheel bearing. Went out of their way to check service bulletins. Gave good information. Fair price. This was a while ago and I still always recommend them.

I had a problem that seemed like a universal joint or (AUGH) transmission thing. I took the little beast to them, and was told that my car didn't have a universal, but that it might be a axle problem. (It was.) I asked for a tune-up while they had it, and was told that they'd check it out, because I might not need a tune-up. They called me prior to starting the work, explained what the problem was, gave an estimate (which was identical to the estimate I had been given "off the cuff") and told me I only needed a new air filter, not an entire tune-up. I said "Go ahead", and they had it ready the next day. I had a mechanic (Billingsley's, in Decatur IL) that we had gone to for 20+ years before I moved to St. Louis, and these guys are my "Home away from hometown" mechanics. Thanks, Jimmy (and Rick, and Bruce!)

They took over the shop from D&H auto repair that I went to for many years. The best reason I go there is I can walk to the shop. They never do work that they don't think you need. Always try and save customer money.

On a number of occasions I have taken a car in to Gray's for a repair and have been told that while they can fix the problem, it will cost a lot of money and that the problem really is not serious enough to nedd to be fixed now. I have been taking my cars to Gray's for 15 or more years. They are honest, accomadating, and very good.

This is the same shop that is listed separately in this section as Gray's Auto Service. This is by far the best car repair shop I have ever used. They are always honest, they do not make repairs that are unneeded, and often after checking out a car will tell you that you really don't need a repair work done. The employees are friendly and seem to really appreciate your business. I ALWAYS recommend this shop to everyone.

Took the car in Monday morning at 9:30 to have a brake switch and belt replacement. The car was ready by 11:30. Friendly, polite, competent and well-priced: the recipe for good auto service. Highly recommended.
