I've used this shop for the past twenty plus years to keep my junkers rolling. And there's been more than one car problem that I brought in where they told me the repair was too expensive to justify on my old car. Advised me to just live with it as long as the car kept running. That's the kind of advise I like.

Dave and Loren have always been honest and "up front" with me on advising whether a repair was necessary or not, even sometimes doing simple repairs at no cost! Their repairs have always been of consistently high quality.

I have been taking my cars to Dave since 1977. At that time, I had a Ford Police Interceptor with a 460 cid engine. Dave was a Race Car builder, as well as advanced engine technician. He built engines, built cars, and raced them at Brainerd MN. They had BEAUTIFUL colorful race cars in their parking lot. I figured if they could build race cars, they could certainly do a Tune-Up on my Ford. It was the beginning of a life long relationship. I also had Dave replace the stock Motorcraft carb with a Holley 4 bbl, and tweak the timing a little bit,and did it ever scream after that! Dave has since worked at several locations, and many of his customers have followed him to these different shops. He has now been with Automotive Unlimited for at least 10 years. The main difference between Dave at Automotive Unlimited and other shops is the combination of honesty and competence. Those are cliche's, but Dave has been taking care of all my cars forever. Recently I tried to save the $200 I would have had to spend to take my non-starting car down to Dave. Big mistake. I took my car to a local shop two miles away from where I live. Long story short, they screwed things up to the point where the car was worse off than when I left it with them. I ended up paying for the car to be towed to them, and then STILL had to pay the money to take it to Automotive Unlimited anyway. The car had a very subtle problem with the ignition coil. The coil tested okay with an ohmmeter, but the Diagnostic Specialist at AU "didn't like the scope pattern". So they replaced the coil, and the car has been perfect since. Many technicians would not have caught the subtle gltches in the ignition scope pattern. Automotive Unlimited has an extremely rare combination of honest behavior, the best diagnostic skills I have ever found, and finally the very expensive Scopes AND scanners AND computer testing equipment to allow them to find the most difficult and complex problems. They won't send your car out of their shop unless it is perfect. If you give them a try, I'm pretty sure you'll go back to them again. Personally, I will be taking all my cars to them until Dave retires (which will be a long time). His brilliance with engines and cars has been invaluable for me for more than 30 years. The only reason I did not give them 4 stars for Hours of Operation is because they are not open on Saturday. This is actually good though, because it prevents their Technicians (and Dave) from working too many hours every week, and Dave will not turn the shop over to somebody else to run it on Saturdays, when he would not have control over the pristine level of quality that he demands. The 3 stars for public transportation is because they are in a commercial area which is probably about a mile away from public buses. But I'm sure they would give rides to people who are in a reasonable radius of their location. The costs for auto repair these days are high everyplace, but the prices at AU are about the same as the industry average in the area. Anybody can put tires on your car or change the spark plugs. But when you have a serious issue, and especially if you have had bad experiences with other Auto Mechanics, consider giving Automotive Unlimited a chance. Ask for Dave V. He's the brains of the operation. If you go to AU and find out what they are like, consider leaving some feedback here. We all benefit by knowing what shops are the best.

Every experience we've had with Auto Unlimited has been fantastic. Diagnostic is quick and free--they explain their recommendation and it's never padded or made up (multiple times they have told us that repairs aren't cost-effective or that the problem is annoying but not safety related). And when they do make repairs, they're fast, reasonably priced and efficient. We needed a side mirror replaced and they worked with us to find the cheapest part available (the matching part was almost $600). There's not much more to ask for: honest, fair, and dependable. We won't take our cars elsewhere.
