Bruce & Harold (fondly known by all in my family as Harold & Maude) started out with Mel at Troy Street Garage years ago, then opened their own shop in a new location when Mel went to Old Mechanix Heaven. Harold & Maude are always there when you need them for big problems and little ones. Never try to mess with your head; find problems and solve them quickly & at reasonable prices; explain everything clearly; and are all around Fine Upstanding Citizens (cue fife & drums, flags waving, rockets red glare.) They're the auto-equivalent of the old family doctor, have been taking care of most of the cars in my extended family for as long as I can remember. (except when I drove VW's, in which case I used Autohaus, see other listings for Royal Oak.) When you find mechanics this good, you hang onto them. If it aint broke, they don't fix it.

I brought my 94 Mustang in for intermittent noise problems that was the result of a cable being displaced. They simply moved the cable, which fixed the noise, and I was only charged a pittance for the time it took them to find the problem. They really could have tried to overcharge me for an unnecessary repair, but instead I was treated fairly and honestly. In addition to this, the technicians were helpful, and they keep a professional appearance in every aspect of theior operation. I will certainly be returning here for all my auto maintenance needs in the near future.

4th Street Auto took excellent care of my 11 year old, 250,000 mile Jetta for the past year, and we were thrilled with them. They were highly recommended to me by a co- worker with an even older Jetta who had used them for years. They are very quick and were always able to get my car in right away. They also were very practical and understanding about keeping my old girl going without getting carried away (e.g., my battery repeatedly went dead periodically due to the light in the trunk staying on all the time and running the battery down - they diplomatically suggested that we remove the bulb and be done with it instead of replacing the entire trunk light mechanism). We have moved away from Michigan and will miss them tremendously.

No Bruce anymore. My experience is post-Bruce, but Bill does good work and is a reasonable and honest guy. Unfortunately, he just had to pronounce the last rites on my old Escort, but he did so with sensitivity (sniff) and at no charge (yea!).

I went to this shop for 6 years before moving away from Michigan, and they did all of the regular maintenance and repairs first on my Mazda 323 and then on my Nissan Maxima. They always did excellent work, explained exactly what needed to be done, and never tried to sell me on extra repairs. Their prices were very fair, and they always did the work in a timely manner. They even went the extra mile when I needed something to be looked at urgently, and replaced a battery for me with only 30 minutes notice so I could get to an appointment on time. This is just a great repair shop, one that you can completely trust, which is a bit of a surprise when dealing with auto repair work. The guys even spent 20 minutes sawing off the rusted bolts of my old license plate to mount a new one and didn't charge a cent. Since I'm a woman without any mechanical inclinations:), it was wonderful to have found such a place. If you check the Valu-Coupon packets that come in the mail, you'll even find coupons for discounts on oil changes and brake work. The main guy who runs the day-to-day business, Bill, is also great to work with.

My first experience with now-named Fourth Street Auto: I told them I needed a new radiator. They called & said I needed a new hose & the charge was under $25. Since then, their work has been so consistent that I am comfortable taking in my 1999 beat-up Honda Civic & asking for work done in priority needed up to $500 or $300 or whatever. The last time I was there for costly exhaust repairs (what is it with Civics?), I was sure I needed rear brakes & told them so. They said I could wait another 10,000 miles. Hurray.

I just moved to Royal Oak, and I was looking for a new mechanic. I wanted someone trustworthy who I would take my cars to whenever there was a problem. I found the positive reviews on this site and gave them a shot. I took in a 10 year old Saturn with 107,000 miles on it. It had a knock on the front end. They worked on it for two days. They heard the knock, but couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle. They inspected it and deemed it safe to drive. We agreed to keep an eye on it, and they will check it out again if it gets worse. Then the best part. They didn't charge me a penny. Most shop's I've taken any car to have a service charge ($75-$125) that they charge you just to look at the vehicle. These guys spent hours checking it over and making sure it was safe for my wife to drive. Bill, the guy that runs the front office was courteous, friendly, and easy to talk to. He seemed to know all the other customers by name. They've created a loyal customer who will gladly refer others. Thanks a bunch guys!
