My 1997 Volvo 850 was making a progressively obvious noise before the engine warmed up. I had my brother and my independent mechanic listen to it, and they both thought it was the transmission. I called a transmission shop, and they said they would need to listen to it but the recommended shop was a 30 minute drive and, by then, the noise would be gone. I went to the gym that Friday morning, ran on the treadmill wondering what to do and asked for divine intervention to intervene. I walked out to my car and there, placed in the door frame of my car, but nobody else's, was a business card. It said "Expert Volvo Repair". So I called the number and explained that the noise occurred only when the engine was cold, so chances were that it would be gone by the time I got to the shop. And Chis Caouette, the owner of Expert Volvo, said that he would come to my house first thing the next morning and listen to my car. It only took about 2 seconds of listening before he smiled and said it wasn't my transmission. It was my air pump. He also said it wasn't causing any harm to my engine and that I could keep driving it with the noise. I ended up deciding to replace it anyway. I have since gone to Chris for all my Volvo repairs, and he always gives me the option of an after- market part versus a Volvo part and will even tell me when they are made by the same company and it doesn't make a difference. He will loan me a car if I need to leave mine, and he has even come to my work place to change my battery and to get my car to bring to his shop. He has even made a heads-up list of things that will need to be repaired in the coming months, which is very helpful for budgeting. He is also a certified Volvo mechanic and spent years working at a Volvo dealership. I love my 14 year old Volvo, and now with this mechanic in my area, I have a wonderful sense of relief that I will be able to keep my car running well for years to come.

Chris is GREAT!!! I need to clarify a couple of things though: when I answered that he "fixed the problem the first time" the answer is no, but that's why I am such a fan. I had taken my car elsewhere after she (Vera Wagon - very elegant and stylish don'tchaknow)had just quit for no apparent reason. The engine would hitch, then all the lights on the dash would come on and the car just died. Sitting in the driveway, on the highway, driving around town.....Sometimes she'd start right back up, once I had to be towed. So, I took her to Chris who was also stumped. He replaced a part, didn't take any money, then told me to drive it for a week or so and see if it still happened. It did. So, back to Chris who replaced another part - still wouldn't take a cent and sent me out again. After that time (still happening, but not as frequently) I left Vera with Chris, he drove her for a week or so (I had the loaner, another Volvo), tried one more repair and voila! It worked! Finally, he let me pay him, and it was something crazy like $300. My last repair at another shop had run almost $1000. So, I will never go anywhere else, and since then, Chris has taken care of all my repair work. He is friendly, honest, affordable, incredibly hardworking, and frankly, funny as heck. He is a pleasure. He even used Vera as his "poster car" on his address change post cards! PS I think that's the labor charge, but don't remember offhand. I have met others who use him and they all feel as I do. Strongly recommend. Worth the drive.
