My Nissan Pickup broke a belt in front of his shop late one Friday night in January. I left the truck in his driveway and early the next morning picked up a new belt and went to change it. His house is behind the shop, and he saw me struglling with frozen fingers (remember, this is Augusta, Maine in the great frozen north) to get the old belt off. He came out and insisted on fixing it for me in his shop, for free!

I am actually a fifteen year old Porschofile, but my father has been dealing with this mechanic almost since he opened in 1975. I do not know if he does more than general repairs, but every repair he does is done right in every way and explained carefully. The family normally keeps cars mint for close to ten years, and this man really begins to know the cars personally. Even before he knows the cars personally, he takes pride in both himself and the car. And by the way car guys and gals, he's a true enthusiast and not just in it for a buck.

Gary is great! I've been going to his place for 13 years. I recently had a problem with my car which he, after much work, diagnosed as the result of a mistake a mechanic of his had made 20,000 miles earlier. (The car had been running fine all that time.) He fixed it and refused payment saying "That's the way it is in this business. If you make a mistake, you admit it and set it right." (!!!) I don't know what planet that may be true on, but I'm sure glad to know a guy who works that way. I once heard him tell another customer that he could get the repair done at the dealer for the same price and with a warranty on labor costs he couldn't match. Needless to say, the guy preferred to have Gary do it, just the same.

They fix foreign cars - honda, volvo, subaru, toyotas mostly. They are honest, a third the cost of the dealers, and look out for their customers. They have an excellent reputation. I've been going there 19 years as many of my friends have also and I've never heard any disatisfaction with their work.

I brought in my recently purchased used car with what I thought was a funny noise and odd shifting behaviour from the automatic transmission. They diagnosed the noise as fuel injectors, perfectly normal. The transmission would not behave for them the way it did for me, of course. No charge for the opinions, not every garage would turn down a potentially lucrative transmission and engine noise job.
