My '96 Jetta was very slow on acceleration; Fred was the only person who was able to diagnose the dist. sensor problem along with timing belt incorrectly installed. Big improvement performance.

My family was in the area on vacation when our Saab had a coolant leak on a Thursday. After calling numerous shops that were too busy to help me, Fred Helbig, who's shop was also very busy, agreed to have the car towed to his shop. Understanding that I had to leave on Saturday and that I lived a 7 hour car ride away, Fred worked some magic to get the part and came in on his Saturday to complete the repair. Without Fred's assistance my family would have had to rent a car to return home and I would have had to return to the area myself to retrieve the Saab when it was repaired the following week. I highly recommend Helbig's Repair Shop!

Fred Helbig did excellent work on my 2002 VW Eurovan. He spent hours diagnosing multiple problems that no other mechanic, the VW dealer included, could properly diagnose. He didn't just throw new and expensive parts at the problem. He carefully and thoughtfully tracked down every issue and saved me thousands of dollars. I can't possibly explain everything that Fred did for me but I can give you a brief summary: Fred tracked down faulty wiring problems that were causing all kinds of strange problems -- saving me from buying a new alternator (that I didn't need, even though the VW dealer told me that I did) and lots of other new, unnecessary parts. Fred also correctly diagnosed a faulty accessory battery and relay under the driver's seat (which the VW dealer told me was fine). Finally, Fred noticed a transmission issue and replaced a faulty electronic control module in the transmission with a used unit which saved me from an expensive transmission repair. At every step of the process, Fred kept me up to date and educated me on the options and ramifications of my choices (new vs. used vs. rebuilt, etc). Knowing that I was planing to drive the van cross country, Fred insisted on taking the van for a 200+ mile test drive. When new problems developed on the test drive (through no fault of Fred), he diagnosed and repaired those as well. Then he test drove it again, just so we wouldn't be stranded on the side of the road. I didn't know Fred Helbig before I stepped into his shop, stranded on the side of the road. Some mechanics could have taken advantage of that kind of situation, charging as much as possible for doing the minimum required to get me on the road and out of sight. Fred did the opposite. He offered excellent service to us in our time of need and charged far less than he probably should have. If you are looking for a thoughtful and competent mechanic who will take the time that is necessary to properly repair a car and you find yourself in western Maryland, then Fred Helbig is your man. I recommend Fred Helbig without reservation to all Eurovan owners and anyone who needs a car repair.
